Muncie, Indiana

There is something good and clean and fresh about the city of Muncie, Indiana and somehow it seems to return us to days long gone by, as one walks through the downtown area admiring the blend of new and old architecture. The hustle and bustle has been replaced with a serene, welcoming atmosphere that seems to draw one in to discover more. You too could be fascinated by this charm - when moving to Muncie.

History:
From a humble Native Indian village to an important manufacturing center in about 150 years, Muncie began life in 1827. Today it is a thriving city with a population of around 70,000 residents which rises to 119,000 if you include the Metropolitan Statistical Area of which it forms a part. The Delaware Indians were an Eastern tribe that moved into Ohio and then to east to central Indiana during the 1770s. In so doing they established many towns along the White River, including Muncietown which is close to modern-day Muncie. The Delaware Indians ceded their rights under the Treaty of St Mary’s, Ohio in 1818 and then moved out westwards. This left Delaware County open for development.

Economy:
The industrial sector has been Muncie’s main economic driver since the late nineteenth century. Manufacturing remains important to the economy as it has done since the Indiana gas boom of the 1880s. The availability of natural gas resulted in many factories springing up and relying on this cheap energy resource. In 1888, the Ball Brothers relocated their glass factory from Buffalo to Muncie and this association was to continue for another 110 years until their headquarters moved on to Broomfield, Colorado in the late twentieth century. But many others stayed on and supported Muncie for a good period until turbulent times changed the industrial outlook both locally and nationally. Like so many mid-sized cities throughout the rust belt, Muncie was forced to reinvent and the current-day effect of that has been a much wider spread of sectors arriving to do business. The current economic backbone takes the form of health care, retail, education, and service industries.

Tourism:
Make sure you allow sufficient time to take in the various tourist attractions on offer in Muncie. The ultra-modern Minnetrista Cultural Center is a good starting point and a “must see” destination. It features nature, arts, culture and history. The downtown heart of the city is a delight to take in with its revitalized residential and commercial properties. There are many activities on the entertainment front too, with festivals, various other events, concerts and theatre productions on offer. If it is the great outdoors that you are looking for, well then there is plenty to go and see – check out the Parks and Outdoor Venues section of the official Muncie website. Otherwise, there are shops, and more shops and shopping centers to entice you.

Universities/Colleges:
