The area was inhabited by the Shoshone-Bannock and Northern Paiute Indian tribes. The first exploration trek was successfully made in 1805 by Lewis and Clark. The area was also toured by John Colter who discovered the Teton Pass and spent the winter in the Teton Valley. Lewis and Clark gave rich descriptions of the area which attracted numerous traders. Overtime the settlement grew and became an agricultural community. The economy remained focused primarily on agriculture till 1949, when the National Reactor Testing Station opened. Subsequently, the city became dependant on high income jobs from the Idaho National Laboratory. Attracted by the high paying jobs, the population grew. In 1993, the lab made several cut backs. As a result, new businesses like call centres, retail, entertainment, restaurants and healthcare providers flourished. The city ultimately became diverse both in community and economy.
