City Moving

Boise, Idaho

Boise, Idaho has a scenic location on the Boise River and has the picturesque Rocky Mountains as its backdrop. When moving to Boise, you will soon find yourself enchanted with the very mixed terrain surrounding the city that includes desert, mountainous regions, rivers and lakes. Not only is Boise the capital of Idaho, but the largest city in the state with a population of 205, 314. It is also a center for commerce, banking and government for the state. Boise’s stunning scenery and a prosperous economy makes it a popular moving destination.

Economy:
Boise began as a supply and service point for the mining camps in the nearby mountains. It continues to be an important commercial center for smaller towns and agricultural establishments in the northern Rockies today. In addition to mining, farming and timber have played important roles in the development of the Boise economy.

The present economy has shifted away from its traditional sources towards a more diversified base. State government is one of the city's main employers, since Boise is the capital of Idaho. Boise ranks sixth in the nation for the number of corporate headquarters located in the city (in relation to its population base). Corporate headquarters in the city include Albertson's, a supermarket chain, Boise Cascade wood and paper products, Morrison Knudsen, the J.R. Simplot Company, Micron Technology, TJ International and Washington Group International. Tourism is another large source of revenue for the Boise area. High technology industries are becoming an increasingly important sector, and the Army National Guard's Gowen Field also has an economic impact.

History:
The city’s name comes from the French word for wooded. In May 1833, Captain Benjamin Bonneville’s expedition arrived in the present-day city of Boise. Legend has it that the Frenchmen that accompanied Bonneville proclaimed, “Les bois, les bois – voyes les bois (The woods, the woods – see the woods)!” This is also how Boise gained its nickname 'The City of Trees'.

A number of prospectors came to Boise when Gold was discovered in the area in 1862. The site became a convenient supply point for the mining camps in the mountains. After the gold boom ended, the population declined, and Boise faced an uphill battle for survival. The town was in an isolated location, far off the major lines of transportation, and the climate was too dry to support farming. The determined citizens of Boise set out to make the area livable by developing irrigation systems, planting crops and mapping out a town with streets running along the river. Their success led to the rapid growth of the town which was then incorporated as a city in 1864.

Tourism:

Located along the Boise River and nestled against foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the city offers many outdoor activities to local residents and visitors, from skiing at Bogus Basin Ski Resort to biking on the Boise River Greenbelt to boating at nearby reservoirs. The City of Trees also offers cultural experiences from the Boise Art Museum, to the Basque Block and the Idaho Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial.

Colleges/Universities:

Interesting Facts:

  • The city has been cited by publications like Forbes, Fortune and Sunset for its quality of life.
  • The Gene Harris Jazz Festival is hosted in Boise each spring.
  • Boise (along with Valley and Boise Counties) hosted the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games. More than 2,500 athletes from over 85 countries participated.
