Make sure you find time to visit the Albany Civil Rights Museum and the Albany Civil Rights Institute. Plan a visit to The Wetherbee Planetarium in Albania with the younger members of your family. The Museum Of History and the Science Discovery Center located on 100 Roosevelt Avenue are must see.

History:
Archaeological evidences show that Albany has been inhabited since the last 10,000 years and is close to the Flint River. Creek Indians, from lands which are now called Albany, were first discovered by Spanish explorers who reached Georgia around 1560. Nelson Tift founded Albany in 1836. People hoped that it would transform into a trade and transportation center like New York.

Once, there were 55 trains plying everyday, over the five train lines in Albany. Certain parts of the Thronateeska Heritage Center are housed in the Union Station depot. Ray Charles, bandleader Harry James, Ray Stevens, Jim Fowler (designer of the Chehaw Park), Alice Coachman Davis, golfer Nancy Lopez, baseball star Ray Knight, are some famous personalities from Albany.
