History:
Delray Beach was originally named Orange Grove Haulover after the Spanish invaded the area that later populated the place with citrus seeds. In the 1860’s William Gleason purchased a large percent of the area, who then sold the land to various settlers. The settlers were allowed to use their purchased land to do whatever they wanted, which is why Delray Beach first started as a farming community. Delray was originally named after William Seelye Linton but was later named Delray which in Spanish means “of the king” in 1901. The community’s population when it was first chartered was small, but it later grew as well as the farming industry, which included tomatoes and pineapple in addition to winter vegetables.  In 1911, Delray Beach was two separate areas until the canal area and the ocean part was incorporated and the two towns later merged in 1927 which became the Delray Beach that is known today.
