Sarasota, Florida

Visitors and residents rave about living in or wanting to move to Sarasota, Florida. The city nicknamed “Paradise,” off the Southwestern tip of Florida, is home to approximately 52,000 people. The hot Florida sun and subtropical climate attracts people to this waterway city. About 141,000 people including 22,000 tourists from Europe visit Sarasota’s renowned white beaches every year. So far, local news sources have confirmed that the BP Oil Spill that occurred on April 20, 2010, has not caused any damage to the coastal regions of Sarasota County. Sarasota County Officials have released a state of emergency, however, to set aside staffing and funding to tackle the situation of oil washing ashore. Emergency officials keep reassuring people that the effects of the BP Oil Spill on the region will be minimal and regulated. Other than this current happenstance, Sarasota has had a rather clean slate as a city, despite a few dips in housing prices, which is actually bringing more intrastate and interstate moving companies.

Economy:
Local employers of the coastal city of Sarasota, Florida include the Publix grocery store chain, the School Board of Sarasota, Tropicana Products and the not-for-profit Bon Secours Venice Hospital & Healthcare. The housing market, notably dipped in 2008, which caused extremist economists and the Financial Times to point to Sarasota as the epicenter of the 2008 housing market crash. Local media argued this by pointing to the magnifying glass newspapers and extremist economists held to Sarasota as a city in the spotlight because of its well-known real estate successes and triumphant tourist city. “The greed and foolishness that played out across the nation was at least as strong if not more so here, simply because this is such a desirable place to own real estate,” Matt Sauer of the Herald Tribune said in June 2010. It’s not a surprise people are inspired to move to Sarasota, Florida. Even starlets such as Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Tom Selleck and Michael Jordan have inhabited the calm shores of Sarasota. Current celebrities that call Sarasota home include: author Stephen King, wrestler Randy Savage, Jerry Springer and “Glee” star Jane Lynch. Those moving to Sarasota will soon discover a way of life that is slower than most, where family life and leisure are as important as ones work.

Tourism:
Some people move to Sarasota to enjoy the calm beaches and renowned golf courses. Others come to get a break from busy lives of working in big cities. Here in Sarasota, there is a mix of both leisure and work. For those who want to rent a fancy room by the water there is Sarasota’s Ritz-Carlton, the exclusive beach club and world-class resort. The beach is quiet and relaxing. There is also shopping alongside the beach in the St. Armand’s Circle that includes shops like Lilly Pulitzer, Tommy Bahama restaurant and the one-of-kind Oh My Gauze store.

The art and performance scene of Sarasota started in the 1920s when John Ringling and his wife, of the world-famous circus Ringling Brothers Circus, began injecting the town with art and architectural spaces. By the end of the development, there were new concert halls and gallery space for artists to display their work. Currently, Sarasota is home to the Asolo Theatre, the Sarasota Ballet of Florida and over 60 golf courses. These attractions for various tastes pulls people into a city like Sarasota, Florida—much more than just a beach paradise.

History:
The costal city of Sarasota, Florida was first inhabited by people who hunted and gathered with ease because of the plentiful amounts of plants and animals residing by the waterfront. Fishing was the inhabitant’s main source of food. Europeans moved into the area in the 1500s. The area was already inhabited when the Spaniards arrived; attacks ensued as the English and the Spanish fought over the natives’ land. In 1819, the state of Florida was given to the U.S. before it became a state in 1845.
