Whittier, California

California’s climate ranges from coast to coast; there are arid conditions as well as subarctic norms in the state. But in the small city of Whittier, California, the weather resembles the Mediterranean climate that is rainy during the winter months then dry during the summer. Cooler summers means there are plenty of comfortable things to do. One of those fun events to partake in based in Whittier was featured in The New York Times this week. Every July, around the third week, a group of college counselors from across the country ride bikes around from college to college including Whittier College in a “Tour D’Admission.” About seven counselors travel over 100 miles on bikes and tour the colleges around Southern California. Then they Amtrak it to Solana Beach to the north of Los Angeles and then visit the La Jolla section of San Diego. From there, they bike to the University of San Diego, near Torrey Pines. Other members of the biking group of counselors will venture on from here to Northern California. Here, is just a taste of the spontaneity and fun of the Southern Californian region.

Economy:
Whittier’s infrastructure is very well known in Southern California. There is a great balance of economics, people and culture that makes this a great city to grow up or live in. There are about 42,714 people in Whittier, California, but that number is constantly growing. The Whittier City Council recognizes that people are moving to Whittier mainly because of the cultural wealth of the region and the opportunities that the region offers people who are looking to chase business ventures. Bringing more business to the city will benefit everyone, including many of the Whittier moving companies that are already seeing increasing business every year.

For a year now, the Whittier City Council has been implementing a Local Stimulus and Business Assistance Plan that offers beneficial services and initiatives to business owners and companies that offer high-paying jobs. The goal for this plan is to develop the city of Whittier to its full potential of making money for the city by creating jobs and offering visitors more. So, far the initiative has been very successful since the start a year ago.

History:
Whittier is currently located in the Los Angeles County of California; however, in 1784 the Whittier land was just a part of the land grant that Manual Nieto, a retired caption in the Portola Expedition of Spain received. By 1822, Mexico had achieved political independence from Spain, so they in turn appointed someone else to govern the lands. They began to issue land grants to individual racheros. Whittier roots can be traced to a land owner named Jacob Gerkens who acquired the land from the U.S. government as a German immigrant under the Homestead Act. The small cabin that be built on the property still stands as the Jonathan Bailey House.

Tourism:
There are many parts of Whittier that are worth visiting. In Uptown Whittier, the city’s historical business district is very commercial offering up loads to do in any season. Visitors and locales call Uptown Whittier eclectic, vibrant and ever-changing. Be sure to visit the old vintage movie theatre besides getting some of the delicious offerings at the local restaurants of coffee shops. Throughout the year, there are always events including family fairs, car show, antique street fair and more. Another must-see on your Whittier trip is the Turnbull Canyon Road on Beverly Boulevard and Beverly Hills Drive where you can get in a car and experience a very typical mountain road. Be sure to talk to some locals before your ride, if you want to hear some suburban legends about the drive down the road at night. No matter what you choose to do, Whittier will offer up a fun and memorable experience.
