Pomona, California

Pomona, California was named in honor of the Roman goddess of fruit, which reflects its history as a city of citrus orchards and farms. Nowadays Pomona has taken on a more residential quality, but the city is still “fruitful” in many ways. Its attractive, pedestrian-friendly downtown area has beguiled many people into moving cross-country to Pomona.

But there is more to keep the Pomona moving companies busy than the lovely downtown area. Pomona’s city council works hard to persuade business into relocating to Pomona to take advantage of the extraordinary development opportunities of its seven economic corridors.

Economy:
Although Pomona is sometimes considered a suburb of Los Angeles, it is a true city with its own institutions and historic resources. Important contributors to the local economy include the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds, as well as the California Polytechnic University and several medical centers.

The city has also focused its efforts on renewing its downtown area with pedestrian-friendly shopping districts, and it has revitalized several commercial corridors. For example, the historic North Garey Corridor has recently received an upgrade to its mass-transit system, which will link the restaurants, homes, medical centers and retail establishments to the North Garey Metro station by means of streets and pedestrian walkways.

The largest sectors of Pomona’s economy are manufacturing, wholesale sales, retail sales and health care. The most important products of the manufacturing industry are plastics and rubber, computers, paper and printed products, metals and machinery, food products and furniture.

History:
The city of Pomona was incorporated on January 6, 1888, making it the fifth chartered city in the county of Los Angeles. By 1891, the town was large enough to merit a visit from President Benjamin Harrison, who stopped at the Southern Pacific Railway Station in April of that year. The town’s success was due in part to the citrus farming that had begun in the 1870s, and by the early twentieth century, Pomona produced more than a third of all of the citrus in California. Its first County Fair in 1922 drew 49,000 attendees and covered 43 acres of land. As time passed, Pomona became more sophisticated. It acquired a college (California Polytechnic University) and a nine-block shopping mall for pedestrians. The mall was designed by artist Millard Sheets, and it was the first of its kind in the western United States. Its attractive layout, which takes advantage of the warm California climate, was a forerunner to the pedestrian-friendly downtown that residents of Pomona enjoy to this day.

Tourism:
Perhaps one of the most pleasant ways to spend an afternoon in Pomona is at the Pomona Farmer’s Market, which is held on the second and last Saturdays of each month. The market offers a stunning array of produce, flowers and other farm products, and it also has live musicians and interactive activities for children. On the same day that the Farmer’s Market is held, local merchants sponsor an Art Walk. The highlights of the Art Walk are the exhibitions hosted by the area’s 25 art galleries, but many restaurants and boutiques also stay open late to tempt gallery-goers. Pomona’s antiques dealers host their own Collectors Faire event every few months at Antique Row, where over three blocks of sidewalk vendors display a dazzling array that is part antique show, part flea market and part festival.

Colleges/Universities:

Interesting Facts:

  • Pomona College was founded in the city of Pomona but moved to nearby Claremont.
  • The use of AC (alternating current) electricity was pioneered in Pomona.
  • The Pomona Library houses the original manuscript of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the Prairie.
  • In the 1860s, the legislature and people of California voted to split the state into northern and southern sections. If the changed had been approved by the United States Congress, Pomona might have become the capital of the new state of “South California.”
