Glendale, California

A diverse community of around 2000,000, Glendale, California is situated between the San Fernando Valley and the San Gabriel Valley, at the foot of the Verdugo Mountains. As with much of southern California, the film industry is prominent in Glendale, with the DreamWorks main studio located within the city limits. Located just minutes from Los Angeles, those moving to Glendale will discover big-city opportunity mixed with a suburban ease.

History:
In 1798, Corporal Jose Maria Berdugo established title to the Rancho San Rafael. Six individuals contributed land to create the original 150-acre town named Glendale. Consisting of only 1,486 acres, the city would be incorporated in 1906. By 1920, the City had grown through nine annexations to over 7,000 acres. The period 1930 to 1950 established many small annexations culminating in the 2,160 acre Whiting Woods and the Verdugo Mountains annexations. In total, 27 annexations have occurred since 1952. The largest of these was the 663-acre Inter-Valley Ranch, known today as the George Dukemejian Wilderness Park. The City of Glendale consists of 30.5 square miles divided into 34 neighborhoods each with its own unique history and character. As these neighborhoods developed, they combined to form the City of Glendale, as we know it today.

Economy:
Although the city's economic base is diversified with strong retail and financial services, the city has, nonetheless, been significantly impacted by economic recession. The variety of issues in the economy involving the housing market, financial institutions, the credit markets and overall consumer confidence has affected discretionary spending nationwide. A recent comparison of retail sales of neighboring communities in Los Angeles County reveals that Glendale's retail diversity and the addition of the Americana to the downtown area have contributed significantly to the local economy. The City of Glendale strives to establish a prosperous variety of arts and cultural experiences throughout the community. This includes the creation and support of diverse art and entertainment venues including theatres, galleries, museums, community festivals and public art exhibits. The city’s attempt to support and promote local artists and arts organizations through the launch of local arts and cultural events aimed at promoting the diverse cultures present within the community, has aide the local economy during economic downturn.

Tourism:
Rarely considered a popular travel destination, The City of Glendale lacks any amusement parks, beaches, camping areas or famous museums. However, what the city does offer is a prime location. The city is less than ten minutes from famous Hollywood, California, the Los Angeles Zoo, Griffith Park and the Griffith Observatory and Planetarium. If shopping is your thing, you will not have to go far at all. The city is the home of the Glendale Galleria, one of the largest and finest shopping malls in southern California. Home to a large assortment of shops and services, including a children's play area and an arcade, the Glendale Galleria offers everything from major retailers to quaint shops. Recreation is plentiful in Glendale as well, with a number of parks offering everything from baseball diamonds and basketball courts, to skateboard ramps and nature trails that offer a scenic view of the Greater Los Angeles area.
