Peoria, Arizona

Peoria is a dynamic desert community of more than 150,000 people northwest of Phoenix. The onetime farming community founded by settlers from Illinois was one of the nation’s fastest growing cities during the recent growth boom. Peoria, Arizona boasts other award-winning facilities including the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts and Rio Vista Community Park and Recreation Center. Those moving to Peoria will also discover 35 miles of trails, top-notch schools, well planned residential neighborhoods and an alluring variety of shopping, dining and entertainment make the city the ideal place to live.

History:
The city of Peoria was established in the 1880s when William J. Murphy’s vision of fertile farmlands fed by water from the Salt River became reality with the completion of the Arizona Canal in 1885. Once this canal was completed, Murphy went east to interest people in settling in this new community. Mr. Murphy was successful in catching people’s attention, and citizens purchased over 5,000 acres of land in the new district from Peoria, Illinois. More people followed the original families and Peoria continued to grow as a farming community. The farmlands were fertile and the people made a good living, despite having to battle swarms of red ants and the occasional rattlesnake in the kitchen. Peoria was incorporated in 1954, with boundaries covering one square mile of land. The warm climate and small-town atmosphere of Peoria continued to attract people, and still do today. Peoria is Arizona's fourth largest city in terms of incorporated area, and ninth largest city in terms of population. The onetime farming community founded by settlers from Illinois was one of the nation’s fastest ¬growing cities during the recent growth boom. The Peoria Sports Complex, built in 1994 as spring training home to the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners, was the first two-team spring training facility in the country. Peoria’s 35 miles of trails, top-notch schools, well planned residential neighborhoods and an enticing variety of shopping, dining and entertainment options led Money Magazine to rank Peoria among its 100 "Best Places to Live" back in 2008.

Economy:
Manufacturing and tourism, traditionally the base of the city's economy, continue to be important to Phoenix. Major industrial products manufactured by companies located in the metropolitan area include aircraft parts, electronic equipment, agricultural chemicals, radios, air-conditioning equipment, leather goods and Native American crafts. As the result of the recent population boom, the economy of the area has taken on new dimensions in recent decades by moving into technology and service industries. Another sector of growth has been financial services and banking as several significant processing or regional headquarters operations call the Phoenix area home: American Express, Chase Bank, Bank of America, Discover Card Services and Wells Fargo Bank. High technology and aerospace firms hold a considerable share of the manufacturing jobs throughout the state. Population and economic growth have made the area the center of the state's economy. More than a third of the state's entire labor force works in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The local labor force is described as young, plentiful and well-educated. Arizona consistently ranks in the top five growth states, and workers are attracted by the quality of life to be enjoyed.

Tourism:
Begin your exploration of the city by heading to the Arizona Broadway Theatre. This Broadway Theatre is a state-of-the-art performing arts venue, providing year-round professional Broadway musicals and gourmet table-service dining in one exquisite package. Next, the Challenger Space Center provides an exciting space-based learning environment where schoolchildren, families, senior citizens, corporate teams and others fly simulated space flight missions where they become flight crews, mission controllers and scientists. When it’s time to get outside, visit the Arizona Ducks. There you can ride in a WWII amphibious Duck. Fun for the whole family, the Arizona Duck is unlike any other tour. Your Arizona Ducks tour starts at Pleasant Harbor Marina, travels through the Sonoran Desert, all while teaching you about desert history, wildlife and vegetation. Finally, head over to WineStyles Park West. WineStyles Park West in Peoria is a wine bar with a retail wine and gift shop with its own style, ambiance and old-world charm. The Winery offers weekly wine tastings for all the adults in the group. With all of these exciting attractions, it's no wonder why so many Peoria moving companies are so busy.
