History:
Glendale’s early history traces back to the construction and opening up in 1886 of the Arizona Canal, which brought water to what had up to then been a very arid area. By 1895, the Santa Fe Railroad had arrived and with it, Glendale opened up to development particularly in the agriculture sector. The city was incorporated on 18th June 1910, and by the 1930s had become one of the nation’s top produce exporters which led to it officially changing from town to city status. 1941 saw desert land being cleared for the development of Thunderbird Airfield for the Army Corps. By 1950, the population of Glendale had passed the 8,000 mark and eleven years later it had more than tripled with the annexation of Maryville. Between the 1960s and mid-1970s the population increased steadily with more educational facilities being opened to accommodate the city’s needs. Glendale’s first aerospace facility arrived in 1981 courtesy of Sperry, now Honeywell. Catlin Court Historic Shops District was created in downtown Glendale in 1990. The city hosted its very first Super Bowl in 2008 and continues to be a residential destination attractive to all.
