Stains

Stains can ruin the whole look of a floor and unfortunately refinishing the entire floor is sometimes the only way to get rid of the stain. Try to get rid of the stain before doing anything so dramatic. Getting rid of the stain may take several attempts so do persevere.

Follow these steps to get rid of stains.
  1. Sand off the finish

  2. Mix oxalic acid crystals in water

  3. Soak a clean cloth in the acid mix

  4. Press the cloth on the stained area and leave it there for about and hour

  5. Check and see if the stain has been bleached away.

  6. If the stain is gone, wash the area in vinegar to neutralize the acid

  7. Apply oil based stain to the bleached area.

  8. Apply the topcoat finish and blend to adjacent areas

Scratches, Nicks and Repairs
It's pretty easy to cover small scratches and nicks using color putty sticks. First clean out the nick or scratch. Apply the putty stick over the damaged spots and allow dry for a few minutes. Wipe clean with a clean dry cloth. If the nick is more of a gouge, you will need to use a wood filler and stain and try to match the existing color.
