Who is AMSA?

Established in 1936, the American Moving and Storage Association is a non profit trade association based out of Washington D.C. With more than 3,500 professional mover members, AMSA is dedicated to making your move successful every step of the way. AMSA moving company members are professional movers moving interstate household goods (between states). In addition, these companies may provide intrastate and local moving services as well as storage in a warehouse. AMSA represents all facets of the moving and the storage industry: van lines, agents, independent movers, forwarders, international movers, auto transporters, suppliers and others.

AMSA carefully screens its mover members, ensuring that consumers are matched to movers who have met all licensing and insurance requirements, and providing for arbitration of disputes between consumers and movers through its "Household Goods Dispute Settlement Program." One of AMS''s goals is a well-informed public that better understands the value of professional moving service.

The American Moving and Storage Association is a member-driven and offers a complete range of services to its members.

AMSA members transport between 1.3 and 1.5 million households each year.

Newport News, Virginia

Newport News’ ideal location and rich history has shaped the city into what it is today. Located on the banks of the Hampton Roads harbor in southeastern Virginia, Newport News is minutes from Williamsburg and a short drive to Virginia Beach and the Atlantic Ocean. From the city’s central location, you can experience the vast Atlantic Ocean, deep-rooted history and the great outdoors. A wonderful place to visit, those moving to Newport News will discover an even better place to call home.

History:
Newport News was among those few cities in Virginia that was established without first being incorporated as a town. Warwick County was consolidated with Newport News in the year 1958. After the American civil war ended, Collis P. Huntington founded the independent city of Newport News. The Newport News shipbuilding and the dry dock company were established by Huntington, and would become two of the largest shipyards in the world. In 1958, Warwick county and Newport News were consolidated to form a single city called Newport News, making it the third largest city of Virginia. The downtown area of Newport News was originally known for farming, however it developed into a city when rail and ship developments came to town. The population in the Newport News region grew significantly from the 1960s through the 1990s. The City Center at Oyster Point was developed into Business Park in 2003 to 2005. Today, that area alone is home to more than 1,500 residents.

Economy:
Northrop Grumman Newport News anchors the Newport News economy. Strategic planning and a pro-business atmosphere have primed Newport News for a bright economic future. The Newport News economy possesses a healthy mix of manufacturing, defense, research and technology, and office-based industries. Newport News also leads the region in retail sales. Traditionally, the defense sector has played a significant role in the Newport News economic base. However, over the last twenty years, the city has made tremendous strides in diversifying this economic base. The defense sector, which includes shipbuilding, military bases and related support industries accounts for about 33 percent of the employment and about 25 percent of the employment in the Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Newport News MSA. The technology sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in the Newport News. Technology-oriented firms are attracted to Newport News for its combination of a highly skilled workforce, low cost of doing business and pleasing array of living amenities.

Tourism:
Newport News’ fine weather coupled with its convenient location makes it the perfect place to explore. Experience mountain biking, a romantic paddleboat or canoe ride or a challenging round of championship golf. Next, head over to the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center, which houses the Ella Fitzgerald Theater. Originally built as the Walter Reed School, this historic building was recently restored, reopened to the public in late 2008. Then, discover the every-changing world of art at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, where diverse artworks and dynamic exhibitions are part of the adventure. Children can create artwork in the interactive Hands on for kids gallery, while adults can find original works by local artists in The Gallery Shop. Finally, one of the fastest growing shopping areas in the country, Newport News provides an ever-evolving mix of new and exciting retailers. Regardless of your taste, you will find a something here to fit every style.
