Who is AMSA?

Established in 1936, the American Moving and Storage Association is a non profit trade association based out of Washington D.C. With more than 3,500 professional mover members, AMSA is dedicated to making your move successful every step of the way. AMSA moving company members are professional movers moving interstate household goods (between states). In addition, these companies may provide intrastate and local moving services as well as storage in a warehouse. AMSA represents all facets of the moving and the storage industry: van lines, agents, independent movers, forwarders, international movers, auto transporters, suppliers and others.

AMSA carefully screens its mover members, ensuring that consumers are matched to movers who have met all licensing and insurance requirements, and providing for arbitration of disputes between consumers and movers through its "Household Goods Dispute Settlement Program." One of AMS''s goals is a well-informed public that better understands the value of professional moving service.

The American Moving and Storage Association is a member-driven and offers a complete range of services to its members.

AMSA members transport between 1.3 and 1.5 million households each year.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Pittsburgh is the second largest city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with a population of 334,563 and the 20th largest metropolitan area in the United States, and the 50th largest metropolitan area in North America, with a population of 2,358,695. The residents of the city are called Pittsburghers. It is known for bridges of all types throughout the city and it is commonly known as the "The City of Bridges" or "The Bridge Capital" of the United States. It is also nicknamed "The Steel City" because of its one-time prominence in steel making. When moving to Pittsburgh, you will soon find out that there’s more to this city than what meets the eye.

Economy:
The original source of its economic development was the extensive trade of steel. Later on, it resorted to high technology, such as: robotics, health care, nuclear engineering, tourism, biomedical technology, finance, and services. Along with these is education which is also a major employer. The city is an ideal moving destination for business investors. In 2006, Expansion Magazine ranked Pittsburgh as one of the top 10 metropolitan areas in the nation because the climate is favorable to business expansion. Among Pittsburgh’s employers are: the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (26,000 employees) and the University of Pittsburgh (10,700 employees). Its Fortune 500 Corporations are: Alcoa; Allegheny Technologies; H. J. Heinz Company; PNC Financial Services; PPG Industries; U.S. Steel; and WESCO International.

History:
From an area dominated by tribes of Allegawis, Adena, Hopewell and several settled groups of Iroquois; this village was later occupied by Europeans. The French discoverer and trader Sieur de La Salle, in his 1669 expedition down the Ohio River from Lake Ontario and Quebec, was the first of many. When the French abandoned and destroyed Fort Duquesne in 1758, Forbes ordered the construction of Fort Pitt, named after British Secretary of State William Pitt the Elder and the settlement between the rivers was named "Pittsborough."
With the Treaty of Fort Stanwix in 1768, the descendants of William Penn purchased from the Six Nations western lands that included most of the present site of Pittsburgh. In 1769, a survey was made of the land situated between the two rivers, called the "Manor of Pittsburgh” and both Virginia and Pennsylvania claimed the Pittsburgh area during colonial times until 1780 when both states agreed to extend the Mason-Dixon Line westward, placing Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania.

Tourism:
Pittsburgh is a city full sights and attractions. The city has plenty of recreational parks and a nice selection of jogging/biking trails. There is also an abundance of opportunities for boating, water skiing, fishing and kayaking provided by the three rivers. Tours and excursions on riverboats are also available. Cultural activities in Pittsburgh include symphony, opera, dance and theater. NFL football, major-league baseball, National League Hockey or college basketballs are all available to avid sports fans. The rolling farmland of Western Pennsylvania surrounding Pittsburgh, and the Laurel Mountains on the edge of the Appalachians fifty miles to the east of the city offers scenic views as well as activities such as hiking, biking, whitewater rafting and winter skiing.
