Trenton, New Jersey is a city of 82,883 lying along the state’s western border with Pennsylvania. Trenton is the county seat of Mercer County, the capital of New Jersey and was, briefly, the capital of the United States in the country’s early years. Known as a manufacturing center during the 19th and 20th centuries (as seen in the city motto, “Trenton Makes, the World Takes”), Trenton today is a governmental and service center for western New Jersey. There are many attractions for anyone moving to Trenton.

Economy:
Although it began as an agricultural area, Trenton has long held a position as a leader in manufacturing and industry. By the beginning of the 20th century, the city produced more ceramics, rubber, rope, linoleum, wire and steel that any other city in the nation. Such industries began to disappear from Trenton in the 1960s and 1970s. While some manufacturing (including automotive body hardware, electronics, food products, rubber, textiles and refrigeration units) continues to this day, most of the city’s economy depends now on government service, trade and services.

History:
Trenton was first settled in 1679, by English Quakers led by Mahlon Stacy. The settlement was originally known as the Falls of the Delaware and received its current name in 1719 (after William Trent, a prominent local landowner). During the American war for independence, Trenton was the site of two major battles. The first Battle of Trenton occurred on December 26, 1776, when General George Washington crossed the Delaware River to defeat Hessian troops. Following the war, Trenton briefly (for two months at the end of 1784) became America’s capital city, which later became the capital city of New Jersey in 1790. The most prominent event in Trenton’s modern period was the rioting that followed the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968. The week of rioting led to 300 arrests, more than 200 destroyed businesses and a major exodus of residents from the downtown area.

Tourism:
Like most state capital cities, Trenton has many attractions. Museums in the city include the Old Barracks Museum (originally an 18th-century jail), the 1719 William Trent House Museum (with furnishings dating to 1675), the Contemporary Victorian Museum (depicting life at the turn of the century) and the New Jersey State Museum (showcasing 19th and 20th-century American art). Other attractions in Trenton include: the Old Masonic Lodge (built in 1793), the New Jersey State House and the Battle Monument (a 150-foot marker to commemorate the first Battle of Trenton). You can reach Trenton by Amtrak, New Jersey transit (New Jersey and New York service) and SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority, servicing the greater Philadelphia area). For those flying to Trenton, the major airports in Newark and Philadelphia are preferred over the small Trenton-Mercer Airport. • A popular series of books by Janet Evanovich, following the exploits of bounty hunter Stephanie Plum, are set primarily in the Chambersburg neighborhood (called “the Burg” in the books) of Trenton.
• Trenton’s two main sports teams are the AA minor league baseball Trenton Thunder (an affiliate of the New York Yankees) and the AA Trenton Titans hockey team (associated with the Philadelphia Flyers).
• General Norman Schwarzkopf, Supreme Court justices Antonin Scalia and Samuel Alito, New York City mayor David Dinkins, basketball player Dennis Rodman and comedian Jon Stewart were all born in Trenton.
