History:
Two attempts to settle Worcester had failed before it was resettled for the third time in 1713 by Jonas Rice, who went on to be elected to the General Court of Massachusetts but died before he could serve. Worcester was incorporated as a town in 1722 and named the shire town or county seat of Worcester County in 1731. Because of its strategic New England location, Worcester served as a munitions depot during the American Revolution.  In 1776, newspaper publisher and author Isaiah performed the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in front of Worcester City Hall. The opening of the Blackstone Canal in 1828 enabled a faster way to trade with Providence, Rhode Island, and brought prosperity to Worcester. Soon, new settlers were moving to Worcester to seek their fortunes. Worcester was chartered as a city in 1848.  Worcester became a hub of numerous railroad and stage lines because of its central location in the Northeast.
