Who is AMSA?

Established in 1936, the American Moving and Storage Association is a non profit trade association based out of Washington D.C. With more than 3,500 professional mover members, AMSA is dedicated to making your move successful every step of the way. AMSA moving company members are professional movers moving interstate household goods (between states). In addition, these companies may provide intrastate and local moving services as well as storage in a warehouse. AMSA represents all facets of the moving and the storage industry: van lines, agents, independent movers, forwarders, international movers, auto transporters, suppliers and others.

AMSA carefully screens its mover members, ensuring that consumers are matched to movers who have met all licensing and insurance requirements, and providing for arbitration of disputes between consumers and movers through its "Household Goods Dispute Settlement Program." One of AMS''s goals is a well-informed public that better understands the value of professional moving service.

The American Moving and Storage Association is a member-driven and offers a complete range of services to its members.

AMSA members transport between 1.3 and 1.5 million households each year.

Springfield, Massachusetts

Founded in 1636, Springfield, Massachusetts is the third largest city in Massachusetts with a population of more than 150,000 residents. Situated in south central Massachusetts, near the Connecticut border, this city is positioned about an hour drive southwest from Worcester, Massachusetts. Springfield's climate changes with the seasons: winters are cold and summers tend to be warm and humid. The city is known as "The City of Homes" because of its abundance of historic and contemporary housing. Conveniently located, Springfield is only a 30-minute drive from Hartford, Connecticut, 90 minutes from Boston and a little more than two hours from New York City.

History:
A company of six men from Roxbury first established Springfield, Massachusetts in 1636. In 1641, the town of Springfield, was incorporated, and officially became a city in May of 1852. From its fur-trading and agricultural beginnings, Springfield eventually grew into a flourishing industrial community. In the 19th century, Springfield became a major railroad center and the city experienced a new industrial boom. The city grew. Such industries as printing, insurance, machine manufacture and finance prospered. As affluence amplified, the city became a cordial city with a noted educational system. River, railroads and highways were responsible for what Springfield is today. The city’s central location now offers the potential for expansion of high technology communications leading to new growth in the 21st century.

Economy:
Historically, Springfield attracted skillful metalworkers to the city. Today, the city's service industry has been significantly growing; however, manufacturing remains a mainstay of the Springfield economy. The industrial base of the city is well diverse: Springfield is home to significant insurance, paper, chemical and health care facilities. The city’s diversity is especially beneficial during challenging economic times. In the 1990’s, the city experienced a recession that struck the entire nation. Fortunately, the recession had a lesser impact on Springfield due to the city’s relatively low concentration of technological companies. Nonetheless, the local economy did struggle to some extent. In the mid-2000s, the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission updated the Pioneer Valley Plan for Progress to address economic concerns through seven plans of action that include cross-border collaboration with the Hartford, Connecticut, region; improving education and technology; and supporting existing industries like agriculture and manufacturing as well as emerging industries like knowledge creation, health care, and plastics. While the number of manufacturing jobs had decreased employment in the service industry jumped has profoundly increased over the same period. Today, Springfield’s fastest growing service sectors are health care and education.

Tourism:
In Springfield, you can visit the Cat in the Hat at the Dr. Seuss National Memorial. Or head over to the Basketball Hall of Fame for a history on the sport. Once you’re done with the hoops, catch a symphony performance, visit the home of a literary giant and tour on of the city’s lively art gallery. Take a trip back in time to Colonial times at historic Deerfield or Old Sturbridge Village. Next, explore the universe at the Seymour Planetarium at the Springfield Science Museum or, for some high-flying fun, hit Six Flags Amusement park. For the nature lover in us all, explore the City’s zoo located in Forest park. With everything from awe-inspiring attractions to outstanding outdoor recreation and great shopping, and enthralling arts and culture, Springfield, Massachusetts is a superb place to visit and an extraordinary place to call home.
