Norcross, Georgia

The city of Norcross, Georgia offers a lifestyle that appeals to those who want to enjoy the time-honored values of family and community as well as a place that embraces diversity and creativity. Those moving to Norcross will discover best of both worlds, as it maintains a quiet, charming downtown district while also serving as home to large corporations doing millions of dollars of business every day.

History:
Around 1868 work resumed on the Richmond-Danville Railroad Line, which had been delayed by the Civil War. The railroad was the beginning for many Gwinnett County towns, Norcross included. John J. Thrasher, called "Cousin John," came from Atlanta to build his home in 1870 and became the first mayor of Norcross, named after a friend and business associate named Jonathan Norcross. Mr. Thrasher served as the town's first mayor from 1870 to 1878, and one of his visions was a city park that would not be used for commerce. The Norcross city park, named Thrasher Park after its founder, is still the center of Norcross, lined with stately Victorian homes, stores and bordered by the railroad. The Norcross post office was built in 1871. For many years, Norcross was a resort town and center of commerce. Norcross was chartered as a town on October 26, 1870. The railroad was proposed in 1856 by Jonathan Norcross (a former Atlanta mayor) and was subsequently approved. Construction was delayed, however, until 1866 because of the Civil War. The Brunswick Hotel was built in 1870 and Norcross quickly became known as a resort area, much like Eastlake, for Atlantans wanting to escape the rapidly growing city. Private citizens have lovingly preserved the many beautiful old residences boasting the famous broad porches which helped make Southern hospitality famous. Stately southern pines and magnificent old oak trees provide a cool, lacy canopy of shade for a relaxing walking tour of our Historic District. Treasured by its citizens, Norcross has been restored and preserved for visitors to enjoy.

Economy:
For over a century, Downtown Historic Norcross has been the economic and social hub of the community. Several of its buildings were originally constructed in 1890, and over time have been home to mercantile stores, livery stables, restaurants and churches and even a theatre. Today, it remains an energetic center of enterprise, with unique retail and an eclectic offering of cuisine and entertainment, as well as services such as automotive parts, legal support, and accounting and insurance services among others. The downtown facade was recently revitalized with the addition of new LED lights in the trees along the sidewalks. A music system is now in place and new brick crosswalks installed. The Downtown Development Authority’s Design Committee did the beautification working with the Public Works Department. In addition, the merchants teamed together to clean up and beautify the backside of the downtown buildings along the previously non-descript "Skin Alley." As a result, Downtown Historic Norcross had kept its historic charm, with a trendy touch beautifully reflected in its stroller-friendly sidewalks and upscale businesses.

Tourism:
To keep the entire family entertained, head over to Malibu Grand Prix Family Entertainment Center. Spend the afternoon on the racetrack or hit the arcade and snack bar for a large selection of games and treats. Next, for the shopper choose from a deluxe mix of shopping opportunities - the 220 stores of Mall of Georgia (the Southeast's largest mall), the outlets at Discover Mills, local mall Gwinnett Place Mall as well as the boutiques and upscale shops of the Forum Shops at Peachtree Parkway and the Avenue at Webb Gin. Next, check the schedule at the Arena at Gwinnett Center and Gwinnett Center, where they host an eclectic mix of concerts, events and family activities year-round. The city’s charming downtown is fun, eclectic destinations for all ages. Kids will love to splash in the Children's Fountains in downtown Duluth and Suwanee's  Town Center Park. Boutiques, galleries and antique shops dot our restored downtowns, and almost all of Gwinnett's cities host Farmer's Markets, free movie and concert series, seasonal home and Ghost Tours, and much more. Finally, there's golfing, the nation's top parks and recreation facilities, featuring aquatic centers and skate parks, hiking, biking and equestrian trails, sports complexes and wonderful picnic spaces. With all of these exciting amenities, it's no wonder Norcross moving services are in such a high demand.
