The Mason-Dixon Line established the southern boundary of the colony and was extended westward in 1784. Pennsylvania played a crucial role in the American Revolution and in the formation of the new republic. Harrisburg is the capital, and Philadelphia is the largest city.

Economy: Dominated by coal and steel, Pennsylvania is a significant contributor to the national economy. At home, tourism is the state's second largest industry, surpassed only by agriculture, with the Poconos, Gettysburg and the Pennsylvania Dutch Country working as popular tourist destinations.
