Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

From modern downtown condominiums and townhouses to historic homes in peaceful neighborhoods on the beautiful Susquehanna River, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania offers singles, couples and families a variety of exceptional places to call home in this capital city. Those moving to Harrisburg will discover an admirable culture that includes all of the amenities you may anticipate from a dynamic urban environment, balanced with a tranquil and diverse set of lifestyle options.

History:
Harrisburg's was incorporated as a city in 1860. The city’s industrial strength played a critical role in the Civil War. Harrisburg was the target of a Confederate Army invasion in 1863, but General Robert E. Lee stopped his troops a few miles from the city and ordered them to proceed to nearby Gettysburg, where the battle that was to be the turning point of the Civil War ensued. The city was the center of massive railroad traffic and supported large furnaces, rolling mills and machine shops. The Pennsylvania Steel Company plant, which opened in nearby Steelton, was the country’s first, and Harrisburg Car Manufacturing Company started as a railroad car manufacturer in the mid-1800s. As was the case throughout the industrialized Northeast, Harrisburg experienced sharp decline following World War II as residents headed for the suburbs. The decline continued into the early 1980s, when Harrisburg was regarded as one of the most troubled cities in the US. A revival brought on by business and industrial development led to residential restoration and new building. During the period between 1982 and 2003, over $3.4 billion in new investment was taken on by the city, one of the largest investment rates in the nation for a city of its size.

Economy:
Harrisburg is the metropolitan axis for nearly 400 communities. Its economy, and over 7,000 businesses, is diversified with a large representation of service-related industries and the growing technological sector to accompany the prevailing government field inherent to being the state's capital. National firms headquartered either in the region or with major operations here include Hershey Foods, Tyco Electronics Corporation, IBM and Rite Aid Corporation. The city’s largest employer, the state government, provides constancy to the economy and attracts attendant services. Outstanding roads and rail transportation contribute to the city's distinction as a hub for trade, distribution and warehousing. Harrisburg claims national recognition for its stable economy and elevated quality of life. City planners continue to follow a comprehensive land use plan that covers a wide range of elements of the community including downtown, commercial and neighborhood development along with recreational opportunities, parking availability and transportation resources.

Tourism:
Harrisburg offers the pleasures of an urban metropolis while maintaining the warmth and caring associated with South Pennsylvania. Start by taking a leisurely family stroll or bike ride and enjoy the city’s many breathtaking views. Cruise the river on the pride of the Susquehanna paddle wheeler. Or get a wetter, wilder look from a canoe or paddleboat. Next, explore City Island. Home to flavorful eats and sweets, charming shops, miniature golf and carriage rides this part of the city has something for everyone in the group. At the end of summer, the riverfront Kipona Celebration hosts one of the oldest continuously operating festivals, including arts and crafts and the renowned Pennsylvania Chili Cook-off. If you are looking for jazz, Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz concerts and improvisations is the place for you. And Harrisburg's internationally known symphony offers concerts featuring celebrated soloists throughout the year. Harrisburg is also home to a host of venues for art, from quaint galleries and local museums, to local artist exhibits at the Art Association of Harrisburg.

Colleges/Universities:

Interesting Facts:

  • The City Park System is comprised of more than 450 acres of turf (which is mowed weekly during summer months).
  • Harrisburg is one of the oldest American state capital cities in the Northeast.
