Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Winston-Salem is a town most of us have heard of—probably through obscure pop culture references and the legacy of the R.J. Reynolds cigarette company. In one episode of “The Andy Griffith Show,” the guitar player Jim Lindsay mentions Winston-Salem in a music reference. Before the Winston-Salem became the twin city, the patch of land it occupies was referred to as “Wachovia,” which is where the popular Wachovia bank chain gets its name. The new town called Salem after the Hebrew word “shalom”— meaning peace — was established in 1766. The town of Winston was founded in 1849 after Revolutionary War hero Joseph Winston. Not until 1913, did the two towns become the twin city of Winston-Salem whose population is now 217,600 individuals, with many more intrastate and interstate moving companies relocating new residents Winston-Salem every day.

Economy:

Once the town was established in the early 1900s, it flourished as an industrial town selling mostly tobacco, furniture and textiles. R.J. Reynolds famously established his tobacco company here and sold innovative products such as the Prince Phillip Chewing Tobacco in 1907 and Camel cigarettes in 1913. Other cigarettes produced by R.J. Reynolds that were exorbitantly popular were Camel, Winston, Salem, Doral and Eclipse brands.

The twin city of Winston-Salem is also home to the corporate headquarters of Hanes Brands, Lowes Foods, Branch Banking and Trust, T.W. Garner Foods, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, as well as Blue Rhino Propane. After a long period of success in the tobacco and textile fields, the high-tech, bio-tech and medical arena are budding with a vengeance. In Downtown Winston-Salem, the Piedmont Triad Research Park has become one of the most innovative biomedical and technology research facilities. The city’s largest employer is Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Winston-Salem moving companies see relocaters who are mostly attracted to fast growing industries and businesses, and people who seek to be surrounded by the rich history displayed in many of the areas museums and art venues.

Tourism:
It’s not all about industry in this Southern town. Many people call Winston-Salem the city of the arts. Approximately 250 years ago, the Moravians that settled here brought with them orchestras and music ensembles in the colonies. Classical music — a piece in particular by Johann Fredik Peter called “Six Quintet”— was written here in 1789. The tradition of the arts and music has continued in Winston-Salem. Today, the city boasts the Winston-Salem Symphony and the nation’s very first arts council created in 1949.

The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, the first state funded arts school also calls this part of the state home. There is a plethora to see and do whether you want to attend a holiday performance of “The Nutcracker” or roam one of the area’s many museums. There are antique toys at The Old Salem Toy Museum, hands-on activities at the 15-acre park at SciWorks, and deep chronicles of history at the Winston Cup Museum highlighting R.J. Reynolds Tobacco 33-year sponsorship of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series.

History:

The first settlers of the Wachovia Tract were German-speaking Protestants. They lived in the area that is the current home of the Historic Bethabara Park. It was also supposed to be a temporary settlement of Salem; however Bethabara developed and lasted long after Salem was established. Salem was also a congregational town, home to many entrepreneurs. Many of the buildings constructed by the original Moravian settlers are still standing to this day.
