South Bend is a city in St. Joseph County, Indiana. Located five miles from the Michigan border, South Bend is the fourth largest city in Indiana and the economic and cultural hub of the region commonly known as Michigan, and may be best known as the home of the University of Notre Dame. South Bend’s name derives from its location along the southernmost turn in the St. Joseph River, and was originally settled in the early 19th century by fur traders. Today, those moving to South Bend, Indiana will discover an area acclaimed educational institutions, historic museums, and its Saturday afternoon football celebrations.

History:
The first settlements in the current South Bend area were established as fur trading posts. By 1829, the town was growing, with fur traders Alexis Coquillard and Pierre Frieschutz Taylor emerged as leaders. The town applied for a post office, and Taylor was named postmaster later that year. The town was designated as Southold, Allen County, Indiana. The following year, the name of the city was changed to South Bend in order to ease confusion as several other communities called Southold existed at the time. During the late 1830s through the 1850s, much of South Bend's development centered on the industrial complex of. Industry continued to develop in South Bend in the early twentieth century, including Birdsell Manufacturing Company, the O'Brien Paint Corp., and the South Bend Toy Company. Fast development led to the creation of electric rail transportation throughout the area, and in 1925 and a streetcar service was established from downtown South Bend to downtown Chicago, Illinois.

Demographics:
As of 2000, there were 107,789 people residing in South Bend, Indiana. The racial makeup of the city is predominantly Caucasian, with a population of 66.05% White, 24.60% African American, and about 6 % of other races. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.12.The median income for a household in the city was $32,439, and the median income for a family was $39,046. Males had a median income of $31,958 versus $23,744 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,121 in 2000, 16.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.0% of those under age 18 and 9.1% of those age 65 or over.

Sports:
College sports play a large function in South Bend culture, with the University of Notre Dame's Fighting Irish providing much of the sports action for the locale. Football Saturdays have become a major event for the city, attracting fans that come to watch the game and tailgate party. Notre Dame basketball games are also popular, along with the other sports at Notre Dame. Thanks in large part to the location of the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana to South Bend's immediate north, the College Football Hall of Fame was moved to downtown South Bend in 1995, where it will stay until 2010.
