Oshkosh, Wisconsin

Located on the shores of beautiful Lake Winnebago (the largest freshwater lake found in a state), Oshkosh, Wisconsin is indeed a gorgeous city. Surrounded by lakes and rivers, it is a lush, green city, making moving to Oshkosh an easy decision. There’s lots of things to do in Oshkosh, any time of the year – there’s shopping, great restaurants, festivals, and other cultural activities. One can go to sporting events, visit the numerous parks and greenlands throughout Oshkosh.

Economy:
Two of the companies that put Oshkosh on the map are OshKosh B’Gosh and EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. The latter is a privately held company of the Experimental Aircraft Association, Inc. (EAA) which stages "The World's Greatest Aviation Celebration" called Air Oshkosh, drawing thousands of visitors each year. This show features everything aviation – from displays of old warplanes to shows of the latest jet planes.

The former, on the other hand, is one of the most famous children’s clothing manufacturers in the world. OshKosh B’Gosh was started in 1895, originally as a maker of adult overalls, but it was the children’s line that became famous.

The Oshkosh Corporation moved its headquarters to Oskosh back in 1918. They started are a manufacturer of trucks and trucking equipment, whose products are sold in over 130 countries around the world.

Tourism:
Lake Winnebago and the Fox River remains one of Oshkosh’s main attractions, and many people come to the lake to participate in watersports like swimming, jet skiing, boating or fishing. Many events are held at the water front, including Race the Lake, the largest inland lake race in the country.

For those who prefer indoor cultural activities, the Grand Opera House is a Victorian era marvel. This theater was built in 1883, and featured some of the best entertainment back in the day, but now is famous for showing international films and free movies in the summer. Another entertainment venue is the Leach Ampitheater, which is located outside – a wonderful setting by the water, with a capacity of 7,000 seats.

Oshkosh is served by the Milwaukee International airport, as well as the Wittman Regional Airport and Outagamie Regional Airport.

History:
The Menominee Indians called the area home, and it was the rich fur trade which brought many settlers to Oshkosh, the first of whom was Webster Stanley, back in the 1830s. In the middle of the decade, the Knaggs Ferry was founded, which made the area a hub fro commerce, particularly steam lumber companies like the Paine Lumber Company, which served as the town’s economic backbone. One of the first surveyors of the city, Joseph Osborn built his home back in 1844 and today it still stands and is one of the oldest houses in Oshkosh, one of the few not destroyed by the big fires of 1974 and 1875 that ravaged most of the city. It was in 1859 that the railroad finally came to Oshkosh, which only propelled it further, making it one of the largest cities in Wisconsin.
