Salt Lake City, Utah

Pleasant and easygoing, Salt Lake City’s setting is superb, towered over by the Wasatch Front, which marks the dividing line between the moderately lush eastern and the parched western halves of northern Utah. The city offers great hiking and cycling in summer and fall, and in the winter, some of the world's most stimulating skiing and snowboarding. People elsewhere in the U.S. still tend to imagine Salt Lake City as distinctly short on fun, but so long as you're willing to switch gears and slow down, its unhurried pace, and the positive energy of its people, can make for the perfect moving destination.

History:
Salt Lake City itself was only founded in 1847 by a group of Mormon pioneers. These pioneers, led by Brigham Young, were the first non-Indians to settle permanently in the area. When the Mormons first arrived, they lived in self-imposed isolation. Two years later, however, the "State of Deseret" was absorbed by the rapidly growing US, and becoming the Territory of Utah. During the 1850s, the California gold rush brought many emigrants through Great Salt Lake City and US soldiers were stationed here during the Civil War. In the early 1900s, many of city’s buildings were built, city parks were constructed and streets were paved. Between 1900 and 1930, the city's population nearly tripled, mainly due to the wealth created came from mining. Today, the city is trying to come to terms with its mining history and its effect on the environment. Though mining is still important to the local economy it also is developing one of the highest concentrations of biomedical, high technology, and software firms in the nation.

Economy:
Salt Lake City was at first a farming community. Today it has grown into a diverse economic region. As the state capital, county seat of Salt Lake County and the largest city in the four-county Wasatch Front metropolitan area, the city is a government, commercial and industrial hub for Utah and much of the West. The service sector produces the most jobs in the city, especially computer and health care services. Salt Lake City is the largest retail and wholesale market in Utah, and supports a flourishing tourism industry. The construction industry remains significant. Construction remains important to the local economy, despite declining employment since the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Salt Lake City's unemployment rate is declining, and the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce expects continued job growth in the coming years.

Tourism:
Salt Lake City is home to unique attractions and sightseeing opportunities including the City zoo and aviary, the Great Salt Lake, and concerts by the world-famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Other arts and culture options in Salt Lake City vary from dinosaur museums, and art galleries, to excellent ballet and symphony performances. For those who love to shop, the Salt city offers plenty of possibilities for terrific shopping excursions, including malls, shopping villages, specialty boutiques, factory outlet malls and entertainment destinations. If golf is your game, Salt Lake has amazing golf for those of any skill level. Be sure to visit the Mormon Temple, and feast your eyes on some of the county’s finest architecture. For the sports fan, see the NBA’s Utah Jazz play a game of roundball, of head over and cheer on the Utah State football team. Finally, end the night with a few drinks in one of the city’s vibrant nightclubs or trendy lounges.
