History:
Caddo Indians were the first to inhabit the city, as the land attracted them to its black, fertile soils. Tensions between the Indians and Anglo settlers caused the 1841 Battle of Village Creek, involving General Edward H. Tarrant. Some of the tribes such as the Caddo, Cherokee, Keechie, Waco, Delaware and Biloxis signed a peace treaty in the mid-1800s with Texas. Archibald Leonard built a gristmill around the same time; however, the Civil War would soon demolish the city’s population. The city would recover. And in 1876, a train arrived in Arlington, aiding to Arlington’s accessibility. Farmers in the area raised hay, oats, potatoes and sorghum. In addition, cattle and livestock were also vital to the c city’s prosperity. Around 1910, Arlington had grown to include key utility companies and a public school system. Employment and public improvements gained momentum in Arlington in the 1930s. Construction workers, provided by the Works Progress Administration, established curbs and gutters, paved streets and built a new post office on West Main Street. Gambling and horseracing brought people and money to Arlington. Transportation improvements made momentous progress beginning in the late 1950s. A pivotal point in Arlington’s History came in 1957 when the Dallas Fort Worth Turnpike opened. Later, air travel would also arrive in the City with the opening of the Arlington Municipal Airport in the early 60s.

Economy:
Arlington’s pool of workers provides educational, health and social services to the city. Other important industries in the city include the arts, recreation, accommodation, entertainment and food services. The percentage of people involved into professional, management, scientific, administrative and waste management services in Arlington, is small, however vital to the local economy. In Arlington, government workers account for almost 13 percent of the city’s workforce. Another 82 percent of workers comprise private wage and salary workers. Arlington has emerged with a list of advantages ranging from high home values and per capita income in the area to relatively low taxes for individuals and businesses as compared to other jurisdictions. Arlington’s blend of industries and talent is remarkably diverse, and extends beyond education and research and into progressive areas of technology and commerce. Media organizations, nonprofits and technology firms have made the move to the city for its central location within the region, gifted workforce and distinguishing energy and urban appeal. Tourism also helps to supplement the local economy. With the newly constructed Dallas Cowboy’s Stadium, and its close proximity to Dallas, Arlington is becoming a smart stay for vacationing families.

Tourism:
Known as the entertainment capital of Texas (with Six Flags Over Texas amusement park and Hurricane Harbor Water Park) there is plenty to keep you busy in Arlington. The city offers accomplished symphonies and ballets, as well as easy access to terrific cultural facilities. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department is excellent, and there is an abundance of well-maintained parks offering an array of activities for everyone. Check out some of Arlington’s 82 public parks including River Legacy Parks and a 1,300-acre oasis on the Trinity River in the heart of Arlington. The Parks now offer more than eight miles of trails, winding through thick forest and open greenbelts. Before you are done, be sure to visit Dallas Cowboy’s Stadium and experience the massive appeal of the city’s most expensive structure.
