Austin, Texas

The state capital of Texas, Austin prides itself on being far from average. The city is a hotspot for creativity; embracing its community of musicians, artists and progressive thinkers. Known as the "Live Music Capital of the World," the city takes the nickname seriously with nearly 200 live music venues. All this just scratches the surface of what makes Austin unlike any other place. A great place for those moving to Austin, the city is gaining attention worldwide as a center for education, green living, health and as a welcoming community.

History:
Austin, Texas’ American history began to take shape in the mid-1800s. The time brought incredible growth to the petite settlement previously known as Waterloo. The 1850s brought the city its first building boom with the construction of the limestone Capitol building, and the Governor’s Mansion. A second building boom happened in the 1870s with the arrival of the railroad. After a fire destroyed the Capitol, the current granite Capitol was built. It opened seven years later, in 1888. The late 1880s also served as another period of expansion in Austin. The city’s settler population, originally comprised of immigrants from Germany, Sweden and Mexico grew quickly. Soon, the city’s impressive skyline began to take shape. The spectacular Driskill Hotel opened, and remains today one of the Austin’s most distinctive landmarks. Austin became a college town, with the founding of the University of Texas at Austin. This once again added to the city’s population. For the past two decades, Austin has made history as a leader in both technology and resourcefulness. From the launch of Dell computers, a Fortune 500 company, to the growth of Austin as a music and film hub, the city is making its move.

Economy:
A derivative of Austin's leadership in the semiconductor and software industries is the wireless industry. With a developed infrastructure of telecommunication, electric and water capacities, Austin is a foremost location for wireless technologies. Named one of the Hottest Wireless Cities by Newsweek magazine, the city offers more free wireless spots, per capita, than any other city in the US. Drawing on the same knowledge in high technology and innovation, Austin is venturing into the biomedical and pharmaceuticals industry. The University of Texas at Austin is a primary advantage to the city’s economy, and Austin has a history of success in pushing to attract national headquarters; Dell Inc. is not only based in Austin, it is one of the city’s leading employers. A diverse range of companies also chosen to make Austin their headquarters, including Hoover's Inc., National Instruments Corporation and Whole Foods Market

It is a national historic landmark and is the oldest executive residence west of the Mississippi River. The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum is located in downtown Austin and is a great place to learn Texas history.
