History:
The earliest settlements in the area started in 1822. Among the early settlers was Nathaniel Lynch who set up a ferry crossing between the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou. During this time the community at Goose Creek also started to develop. By 1920, Goose Creek also had a rival community on its east, named Pelly. After World War I people began considering merging all three towns into one. There was resistance at first but finally in 1947, the three towns consolidated and the city of Baytown was officially formed on 24th January 1948. A lot of industrial activity followed and the Baytown refinery became one of the biggest Exxon refineries in the world.
