Baytown, Texas is located mostly in the Harris County, although some parts are in Chambers County in the Gulf Coast region of Texas. Baytown is part of the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area and is bordered by Galveston Bay and Cedar Bayou. The city lies along the State Highway 146 and the I-10. The estimated population of Baytown was 78,311 in 2009, which makes it the fourth largest city in the metropolitan area. History:
The earliest settlements in the area started in 1822. Among the early settlers was Nathaniel Lynch who set up a ferry crossing between the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou. The ferry crossing is still in operation today and the surrounding area has become known as Lynchburg. These early settlers also played a crucial role for the Independence of Texas. During this time the community at Goose Creek also started to develop. By 1920, Goose Creek also had a rival community on its east, named Pelly. After World War I people began considering merging all three towns into one. There was resistance at first but finally in 1947, the three towns consolidated and the city of Baytown was officially formed on 24th January 1948. A lot of industrial activity followed and the Baytown refinery became one of the biggest Exxon refineries in the world.

Tourism:
Baytown has numerous activities including sailing, fresh and saltwater fishing, duck hunting and paragliding. There is a large acreage known as the Baytown Nature Centre that features wetlands, many bird species, wild flowers and a lot of other wildlife. The beaches of Galveston Island are also very popular among both residents and tourists. The Evergreen Point Golf Course fulfils the need of the golfing community at Baytown. There are also several parks like the Bayland Park Marina, which provides a dock that is popular for fishing and boating. The Goose Creek Stream Greenbelt is popular among cyclists and hikers. The area also has opportunities for canoeing. Sporting facilities in Baytown are also good with the Gray Sports Complex providing walking tracks, lighted sports fields and many other facilities.
