Sugar Land, Texas

Dubbed “One of America’s Safest Cities,” Sugar Land, Texas was once a major sugar plantation during the mid-18th century. Today, you will find a dynamic city with a positive outlook and a clean and safe haven in which to work and raise your family. Those relocating to Sugar Land will discover an exciting place within a bustling city.

History:
Sugar Land, Texas, has a remarkable heritage, tracing its origins back to the original Mexican land grant to Stephen F. Austin. Austin in turn conferred his rights to Samuel M. Williams who called the land “Oakland Plantation” due to the many varieties of oak trees on the land. Sugar was introduced as a crop in 1844 with a mill quickly following to process the sugar cane. After the Civil War the mill was expanded to a refinery and by 1907 the town of Sugar Land began expanding rapidly. During the first half of the 20th century, the company-owned town of Sugar Land was virtually self-contained. The Imperial Sugar Company provided work and housing for its employees, encouraged the construction of schools and even built a hospital for the well-being of its workers. Other businesses quickly set up in the city to capitalize on their good fortunes. The process of incorporation of Sugar Land finally began in 1959 - today Sugar Land operates under a Council-Manager form of government and functions as a full-blown municipality providing the highest quality of affordable services to its residents.

Economy:
Like most American Cities Sugar Land, Texas has learned over the years to encourage a diverse range of industries and multi-market sectors to avoid major problems in down-market conditions. Similar to the general Houston area, Sugar Land has a large energy sector presence more particularly in terms of petroleum exploration and refining. Also home and headquarters to various sugar companies still, the city has other large employers trading in it too, such as Schlumberger, Fluor and Minute Maid. Computer software companies have also opened offices in the City.

Tourism:
The Museum of Southern History in Sugar Land is fascinating and an absolute “must see”. So too is the Houston Museum of Natural Science in the City. The primary entertainment district of the City is the Sugar Land Town Square, with several restaurants, sidewalk cafes and various retail stores. Festivals are also held in the Square. Located nearby is the First Colony Mall which is a large regional shopping center that has recently undergone major expansion and now incorporates more than 130 retail outlets. Try the Sugar Land Ice and Sports Center if you are into ice skating and not shopping instead.

Colleges and Universities:

Interesting Facts:

  • Texas only has one natural lake, namely Lake Caddo.
  • Armadillo is the state’s official mascot.
  • It is estimated that the cattle headcount in Texas is around 16 million.
  • Texas farms more of its land than any other state.
