Though there is active business and industrial activity in the Bryan area, but the main economic factor is the Texas A&M University. The University defines pretty much all that happens in the economy. It is also the largest employer with more than 19,000 employees. It employs more than 16 percent of the male population and 28 percent of the female population. The second largest employer is the Bryan Independent School District. History:
Originally the area around Bryan was given to Moses Austin in accordance to a Spanish Grant. The land largely remained vacant until Austin’s son; Stephen F. Austin took control of the property. Stephen planned and initiated a settlement at the region now known as Bryan. He brought settlers from different areas by giving them land and benefits. The initial settlement was largely agricultural. The modern day city of Bryan was itself founded in 1821. In 1866 a post office was granted to Bryan and it eventually replaced Boonville as the County Seat of Brazos. The first major development era started after the railroad arrived in 1860. Bryan benefited a lot from the Houston-Texas Central Railroad in the early years. In 1872, the city of Bryan was officially incorporated. The second major benefit to the city came in 1876 after the Texas A&M University was opened nearby. Today Bryan has become a typical Texas town with a great spirit and culture.
