The citation on the city website states, “We're glad you're here and invite you to discover why Mansfield and Richland County embody "America at its Best!" Please take your time and look through our pages. Let it be your resource to make your visit an enjoyable one.” Why heck, that is one real incentive to visit Mansfield in Richland County, Ohio, and, who knows, maybe you will want to move there too. Those moving to Mansfield will discover that an exciting new life awaits them.

History:
First settled in 1808, Mansfield took its name from Jared Mansfield, the U. S. Surveyor General who was responsible for the town’s early development. Mansfield was incorporated as a village in 1828 but by 1857, it had been upgraded to city status. It played a key role in the War of 1812 and the first courthouse, jail and church in Richland County evolved from two blockhouses located in the public square. At the centenary celebrations in 1908 these buildings were a focus of Mansfield’s heritage. In 1929, the buildings were moved to their present-day location at South Park. The arrival of the railroads in Mansfield in 1846 was followed by the first trans-American highway, the Lincoln Highway, in 1913. This opened the door for growth and development in the city which in turn put Mansfield on the map.

Economy:
Mansfield’s early industrial development came about through stove manufacturing industries arriving to set up production facilities in the 1920s. Westinghouse brought exciting opportunities with the production of home appliances, electric lighting and industrial heating and engineering. This lasted well into the twentieth century although in the 1970s cutbacks and job losses in the industrial sector were common due to cheaper overseas supplies. Since then, the City has sought to diversify its economy and rely less on its shrinking manufacturing capacity. This strategy has met with notable success in the form of the arrival in Mansfield, leaders in the healthcare industry. They are now the City’s major employer, and various food companies have joined in to assist with the turnabout. The movie industry has been ever-present since the mid-1950 too, and looks set to provide a good future for itself, and for Mansfield as well.
