Fayetteville, North Carolina

History, Heroes, A Hometown Feeling -- this is the motto of the city of Fayetteville, North Carolina. The city, located in the Cumberland County in North Carolina, is home to approximately 121,000 people and the location of Fort Bragg, a U.S. army post. The city’s history started with the settlement of the land by various Native American groups including the Eno, Shakori, Waccamaw, Keyauwee and Cape Fear Indians who lived there for over 12,000 years. Scottish immigrants settled into the city, which pushed the area to become a pillar of government and trade along the Cape Fear River. More than many of the surrounding cities in North Carolina, Fayetteville has played a great role in defining our nation. The area has seen an American Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the ratification of the U.S. Constitution and recovery from the Great Fire of 1831.

Fayetteville intrastate and interstate movers enjoy being from a city that is very well rooted into U.S. history. After recovering from the Great Fire of 1831 and the devastation to the North Carolina Arsenal during the Civil War, residents of this history-rich city can be proud of its past.

Economy:
Fayetteville, North Carolina is one of the fastest growing cities in the state. Currently, Fayetteville’s largest employers are Cape Fear Valley Health System with about 4,600 employees, Wal-mart with 3,620 employees and Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. with near 3,000 employees. It is a well-developed metropolis with more than 1,500 retail shops, 400 restaurants, 600 banks, real estate agencies and insurance companies.

The military presence also has a great effect on the development of the city. Fayetteville prides itself on being named “America’s Most Pro-Military Town” by Time magazine. According to Time, Fayetteville has offered itself up as the nation’s first sanctuary for military personnel and their families. The need may be disputed, but the residents of Fayetteville believe that some of the cities across the nation are not as supportive as they are. The campaign is said to be a very smart move on the city’s part pushing patriotism and economics. They are expecting to bring in 20,000 new soldiers by year 2011 into the city—bringing in an addition $1.5 billion in revenue. People relocating may find lots of help from local Fayetteville moving companies.

Tourism:
There are many places to see in Fayetteville, North Carolina including the Sand Airborne Division War Memorial Museum that displays an extensive collection of weapons, uniforms, aircrafts, parachutes and other items from World War I. Fayetteville State University is another popular pit stop for visitors to North Carolina. The story behind the school is set in 1867 when seven African American men paid $140 for a lot and developed the site to become a school. The school did not have a permanent site until 1972 when the university became a part of the University of North Carolina System officially. Other popular places for tourists include: the Crown Coliseum for pro-hockey and skating events, the Fayetteville Arts Center a popular public gallery and the Historic Poe House where Edgar Allen Poe and Josephine Poe once lived.

History:
The original settlers of the city were immigrants from Scotland looking to start a life in the Americas. Fayetteville because a city as a product of two settlements coming together in the early 1780s. Fayetteville gets its name from Revolutionary War Hero Marquis de Lafayette. Lafayette led the very first settlers that arrived in horse-drawn carriages. These people developed a government and built up the city as a center of commerce making the most of the Cape Fear River.

As the Revolutionary War (1775-1783) took place against Great Britain for the independence of the 13 original colonies, the North Carolina legislature met here to discuss the ratification of the U.S. Constitution and the chartering of the University of North Carolina. History fills this city’s past, and its future as the largest Army post in terms of number of people present at Fort Bragg.
