Asheville, North Carolina

The city of Asheville is the largest city in western North Carolina and the county seat of Buncombe County. The city is located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is known for its natural beauty. Those moving to Asheville will discover that it is a regional hub for business, health and human services, the arts, shopping, dining and other community amenities for citizens and visitors.

History:
When the stock market crashed in 1929 leaving shattered lives and a fatigued economy throughout the country, Asheville, North Carolina carried the heaviest burden of all. Yet like many American cities, Asheville celebrated a booming economy in the 1920s, blissfully ignoring an awaiting financial doom. Confidence soared in Asheville as a thriving downtown quickly filled with shops and buildings to become known as the hub of Western North Carolina. During the early 1920s, dignitaries and celebrities from throughout the world ventured to Asheville seeking sweet mountain air. Days of depression and strain have achieved for Asheville a rich history worthy of exploration by any visitor to the Land of the Sky. After the Stock Market Crash in 1929, many cities chose to default on Depression-era bonds and liabilities. Asheville city fathers decided to pay back every dime of the city's debts. Many generations paid the price for this decision until the slate was cleared in 1977. Until that year, Asheville had no money to invest in "urban renewal" so popular during the 1950s and 1960s in other cities. The commitment to debt repayment saved from the wrecking ball dozens of Art Deco buildings erected during the city's boom decades earlier. Asheville has recently invested millions of dollars for new construction and renovation to bring the district back. Saving the many classic buildings that contribute to the architectural diversity of downtown Asheville remains an important goal for the city.

Economy:
A commercial and social hub of the Southeast, Asheville regularly appears in national lists as one of the top cities in the arts, business climate, outdoor recreation opportunities, retirement, manufacturing, and quality of life. These rankings share a common denominator: a vibrant city, with a culturally and socially diverse atmosphere and a business-friendly mindset. Though Asheville has thrived over the past decade, there is still a wide variety of opportunities for development. There are spaces for restaurants, small businesses, retail of all sizes, office spaces and light manufacturing. These spaces, spread throughout multiple business districts and suburban areas, offer exposure to varying sectors of the population. The City Council’s strategic operating plan establishes goals to create sustainable, appropriate development within the city limits.

Tourism:
Start by heading to the Haunted Asheville. Joshua P. Warren, the author of Haunted Asheville, designed the largest and oldest running ghost tour in Asheville. This attraction offers five different paranormal tours, a classic ghost tour, and information about Asheville's dark history, the Brown Mountain Lights, and Asheville's most ominous spooks and specters. Next, visit the Biltmore Estate -- George Vanderbilt's historic country estate in Asheville, NC, Biltmore includes Biltmore House, gardens, winery, four-star Inn on Biltmore Estate, shops, restaurants, branded products and outdoor adventures. This National Historic Landmark is an amazing destination offering a wide range of activities for all ages. Then, check out the North Carolina Arboretum.

Young or old, male or female, gardeners, hikers, bikers, and everyone in-between will love the North Carolina Arboretum. Finally, head over to the Grove Park Inn Spa. Enter another world at this enormous spa, where the usual array of spa offerings are supplemented with even more luxurious pampering treatments, magnificent views, a spectacular pool with a glass atrium, an outdoor whirlpool where you can watch the North Carolina sunset and a pervasive sense of tranquility.

Colleges/Universities:

Interesting Facts:
