Jackson, Mississippi

Jackson, Mississippi is a vibrant city filled with some of the friendliest folks around. The “City with Soul” offers something for everyone. Sports enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to the amazing Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. If you are seeking culture and fine arts, there are a multitude of museums showcasing artwork from every medium. You can also catch a professional ballet or orchestral performance. For a complete change of pace there is also the rodeo, held in Jackson every year in February. When you are moving to Jackson, you will instantly discover an exciting area filled with cultural and artistic amenities, as well as delicious cuisine with over 300 restaurants.

Economy:
There are many types of businesses that contribute to Jackson’s financial stability. Agriculture is the most profitable industry with cattle as the cash cow, so to speak. Manufacturing, telecommunications, retail, construction and health care all keep the city’s economy healthy. The automotive industry is an emerging sector in Jackson, and the city welcomed its first car manufacturer in 2003 when Nissan’s plant opened there. The new production facility brought along with it more than 3,000 new jobs. One of the companies headquartered in Jackson is Cal-Maine Foods which has the largest production of fresh eggs in the country. Saks Fifth Avenue also has a distribution facility in Jackson. With all of these opportunities, it's no wonder Jackson moving companies are so busy.

Tourism:
There are many fun and historical things to do in Jackson. Medgar Evers was a Civil Rights Leader and hero who was assassinated in 1963. You can visit his home or the library dedicated to him. Another famous home once belonged to author Eudora Welty. Visitors and fans can tour her home and surrounding gardens. The Tudor style house is on the National Historic Register. Ms. Welty is buried at the well known Greenwood Cemetery alongside more than 100 Confederate Soldiers and former Mississippi State Governors. If you prefer to be close to nature, then a visit to LeFleur’s Bluff State Park might be in order. You can hike on nature trails, go fishing and then stop for a picnic. There are even campgrounds and a nine-hole golf course all on-site.

History:
In 1821, the city of Jackson was founded. In the 1860s, Jackson saw quite a bit of action during the Civil War. Mississippi lost a larger percentage of its soldiers than the other states in the Confederacy. The city was further devastated when it was literally burned to the ground twice by the Union’s General Sherman in 1863. After the second torching, all that was left of the city’s buildings were chimneys. For a time, Jackson was referred to as Chimneyville for this reason. A century later, Jackson was the site of many significant events during the Civil Rights Movement. Nine African American students were arrested for simply trying to read books in a library intended solely for white citizens. During these turbulent years there were many protests, riots and sit-ins for those on both sides of the segregation issues. In 1997, Jackson elected its first African American Mayor – Harvey Johnson Jr.
