Laurel, Maryland lies in the north of Prince Georges County on the Patuxent River and is outlying areas are generally considered to infringe on Anne Arundel County, Howard County and Montgomery County. Those moving to Laurel is conveniently located midway between the large cities of Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Nearby cities and towns include Bowie, Colombia, South, North and West Laurel, Maryland City, Savage-Guilford, Fairland, Burtonsville, and Beltsville.

History:
The first settlers to come to the area now known as Lauren arrived in 1658. By 1824 the village had grown considerably and a certain Nicolas Snowden, whose family by that time owned vast tracts of the surrounding land, build a cotton mill, as cotton growing was the main source of income for the town. With growing business, the mill was expanded and the Patuxent Cotton Manufacturing Company was established in 1835.

Economy:
Statistics released in January 2011 show that the Cost of Living Index for Laurel was 132.6 points, considerably higher than the national average for the United States of 100 points. Unemployment numbers reported in December 2010 were seven percent.

The largest employers of the residents of Laurel are the Fort Meade Army Base, the National Security Agency and the Applied Physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University.

Further industrial development ensued and the community was given the name Laurel Factory, which was officially incorporated as a city in 1870. In 1875 Laurel Factory was renamed simply Laurel.

Tourism:
Laurel’s dinosaur fossil park is one of the best sites in the world to view Princonodon and Astrodon remains and is a fascinating place to spend a few hours.

There are three golf courses in Laurel – the Gunpowder Golf Club, the Laurel Golf Center and Patuxent Greens Country Club.

The city is also noted for the number of recreational parks within the city limits, such as Anacostia Park, Laurel Park and Cabin John Regional Park.

Laurel hosts a number of festivals throughout the year, such as the Herb, Arts and Tea Festival which is held every May and the Riverfest Festival each October.
