Rockville, Maryland

Rockville, Maryland is often considered "one of the nation’s very best places to live and work." In fact, Money magazine stated that Rockville is the "66th Best Place to Live in the United States." Those moving to Rockville should also contact one of our professional real estate agents for their advice. If you are in the market for a rental home or an apartment check our real estate rentals section.

History:
As one of Maryland’s oldest towns dating back to colonial American days, Rockville started out as Hungerford’s Tavern named after the area’s most familiar landmark. Indeed it was from this tavern that calls for freedom from British rule were heard in 1774 after the senseless British move to close the port of Boston and the tea party that followed. Williamsburg followed as the next name and this was to last to 1801 when the Maryland General Assembly elected to change the name once and for all to Rockville. The town was to remain small until the 1870s when the metropolitan branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad arrived. During the early part of the twentieth century growth was steady but not spectacular - at least that was until the 1980s when Rockville’s population pushed the 45,000 mark. Rockville then expanded rapidly as its old familiar role of a recreational, agricultural sleepy village suddenly changed to a cosmopolitan city with many sprawling neighborhoods. Rockville’s future certainly looks bright

Economy:
Rockville has a powerful local economy in place that generates 80,000 jobs within the city borders, and this makes for an impressive job-to-household ratio of nearly four to one. Goodwill Industries International has its headquarters in Rockville. This is a non-profit organization that provides job training, placement services and other community-based programs for people with disability, insufficient education or job experience, and is funded by the huge nation-wide network of Thrift Stores retail outlets. The federal government is a large employer in Rockville and so too is Westat, an employee-owned research company with nearly 2,000 employees at its headquarters in the city. With all of these opportunities, it's no wonder why so many long distance movers are so busy.

Tourism:
The Rockville authorities have developed a very useful website to assist both resident and tourist in selecting upcoming events, and it is a veritable mine of information. As the seat of Montgomery County, Rockville has a high profile to maintain, and it does this by way of a variety of colorful annual celebrations, all held with vibrant and friendly enthusiasm. You can visit the bustling downtown area where the pedestrian-friendly streets and plazas make for a carnival atmosphere all year round, and there are shops and restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets. Rockville also has its own ballet company as well as chorus, band and youth orchestra. Then there are farmers markets, arts and culture to take in and loads of other entertainment ready to enthrall. For the outdoor enthusiast there is a world-class golf course to enjoy, and of course plenty of manicured parks and other recreational venues for just sitting back and relaxing.
