History:
Beginning as three 640-acre homesteads in the late 19th century, what was to become Panama City was incorporated in 1908. The town continued to grow during the early-20th century and soon evolved as a popular port on the Gulf. During World War II, shipbuilding developed into a major industry as Panama City was considered strategically safe due to its Gulf location. The city has continued to develop rapidly since then, as more and more Americans opted to buy relatively cheap accommodation in this popular tourist spot. During the 1980s, commerce hit a slump as nearby Panama City Beach began constructing high-rise apartments with stunning Gulf views. The Panama City Commission took stock of this and a revitalization program was launched. Economy:
Today, Panama City is the county seat of Bay County.
