Founded in 1876, St. Petersburg is the fourth largest city in Florida with a population of approximately 250,000 people. As the 12th largest in the U.S., this city is part of the Tampa–St. Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area is home to population of 2.5 million people that continues to grow with more and more people moving to St. Petersburg. St. Petersburg and Pinellas County rank number two as cities with the highest number of manufacturing employees in Florida. The city has a state-designed Enterprise Zone where businesses receive state corporate income tax, sales tax and property tax credit. St. Petersburg's business market has attracted 20 corporate relocations and 9,000 jobs since 1995. The downtown area has attracted a public and private investment of over $900 million since 1982. St. Petersburg shares one of Florida's top public universities, has world-renowned medical facilities and a world class marine science research complex that creates jobs for the regional workforce of over 1.2 million. Nielsen Media Research ranks St. Petersburg as the “12th Largest Media Market” in the United States. Tampa-St. Petersburg also ranked 14th on Inc. Magazine's list of "The Top 25 Large Cities for Doing Business in America." St. Petersburg is home to two Fortune 1000 companies, and nearby Tampa is home to four more. History:
Before St. Petersburg, Florida’s incorporation as a city on February 29, 1892, much of the peninsula on which the city lies was relatively undeveloped. In 1875, a General from Detroit came to the peninsula and purchased 2,500 acres of land on the shores of beautiful Tampa Bay. General John Williams had a grand city in mind when he purchased the land on which St. Petersburg sits, and the plans for his city included lush parks and wide avenues. There are plenty of inviting parks and broad streets in downtown St. Petersburg, which helps to make it one of the more attractive downtown areas in the entire country. John Williams wasn't the only founder of St. Petersburg. He shared that honor with a Russian aristocrat by the name of Peter Demens. Demens was instrumental in bringing the railroad station to the city in 1888. This was the impetus that led to St. Petersburg's eventual population growth. According to legend, city cofounders, John Williams and Peter Demens, flipped a coin to see who would get the honor of naming the city. Demens won, and thus he named the city after his native St. Petersburg, Russia.

Tourism:
St. Petersburg's tropical weather makes it an ideal home to many outdoor festivals every year. The city hosts more than 1,000 annual events and festivals including American Stage in the Park, the Art Arbor Nature Crafts Festival, the Cajun Crawfish Festival and Earth Day’s Green Thumb Festival. These annual ongoing music and art festivals fill the seven-miles of preserved downtown waterfront recreation areas and pack the city's streets and waterfront with seasonal parades. The city is also home to the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, an Indycar series car race. For the sports minded, St. Petersburg is home to Major League Baseball's Tampa Bay Devil Rays who play downtown at Tropicana Field. Nearby Tampa Bay is also home to the Arena Football League's (AFL) Tampa Bay Storm, the National Hockey League's (NHL) Tampa Bay Lightning, and the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
