Boynton Beach, Florida

The city of Boynton Beach, "The Gateway to the Gulf Stream," is a coastal city located in a rapidly growing area of Palm Beach County. Major Nathan S. Boynton, a native of Michigan who distinguished himself in the Civil War, founded the city, which has a current population of over 65,000. Those moving to Boynton Beach will discover a great city to live, work, play and learn.

History:
It was 1894, one year after the last Barefoot Mailman walked along its sandy shores and two years before Henry Flagler built his famous railroad, that a former Civil War major from Port Huron, Michigan named Nathan S. Boynton first set eyes on the area that now bears his name. He was so impressed by the natural beauty of what he saw, the year-round sunshine and pristine beaches, that he returned a year later with a group of colonists and built the famous Boynton Beach Hotel in Florida to serve as his family's summer residence. The first settlers soon realized that an unlimited assortment of fruits and vegetables thrived in the fertile climate. Cultivated pineapples, tomatoes, mangos, oranges, lemons, grapefruits and limes were packed in crates and shipped by the ton on the newly built Florida East Coast Railroad to satisfy the appetites of Americans across the country. Boynton Beach remained an unknown tropical paradise known for its perfect weather and delicious produce until the end of World War II. Soldiers returning home from the war discovered that the small town located only fifty miles north of Miami was an extraordinarily healthy place to raise a family. In addition, Boynton's close proximity to the Atlantic's Gulfstream soon yielded a bonanza of world-record catches and guaranteed that the best-kept secret on Florida's Gold Coast would be a secret no longer. Since that time, Boynton Beach has grown steadily and never looked back. The city's population has risen from 5,000 in 1958 to a present number of approximately 60,000 residents. Most importantly, Boynton Beach has expanded wisely, retaining the charm of her orange groves, fishing marina and sandy beaches.

Economy:
Marine commerce is the leading industry in Greater Fort Lauderdale and Broward County, accounting for more than 134,000 jobs and $10.78 billion in total economic impact. With more than 300 miles of waterways, marinas, and marine manufacturing and repair facilities, the Boynton Beach area is a world-renowned port of call for the yachting industry. Tourism is the area’s second largest industry, employing 114,386. The Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau reported a record-breaking year in 2009, with more than 10.8 million visitors spending $8.5 billion. The Boynton Beach area has emerged as one of the fastest growing markets for global trade, with more than 40% of local businesses engaged in or supporting international commerce. A growing list of nationally-recognized corporations have established business operations in in the area with corporate or Latin American headquarters, including: AT&T, AutoNation, BankAtlantic, Citicorp, Citrix Systems, Galaxy Latin America, Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft Latin America, Motorola Latin America, Republic Industries, South African Airways, Spherion Corporation, SportsLine.com, and Voicestream Wireless.

Tourism:
The Everglades are a vital piece of our environment and South Florida's water supply, a vast, mysterious place full of history and nature. Experience it by taking a driving tour of the Everglades Trail. Along the way, you will find plenty of chances to explore; understand challenges facing the Everglades; see plants and wildlife; canoe, hike and bike, walk boardwalks and trails and take pictures. There is no must-do route on the 300-mile path, which has 20 sites in Central, Southeast and Southwest Florida. Everglades Trail highway signs make finding sites easy. Next, discover Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market. It’s an 80-acre farm, west of Boynton Beach that welcomes families and “U-Pick” fields of strawberries, sunflowers and tomatoes; fresh veggies, fruits, and loads more. The big red barn really adds to the atmosphere and your kids will beg for the homemade ice cream and caramel apples. From all-day fun with IMAX theaters and space simulators to small, neighborhood places lined with aquariums and seashells, Florida's Hands-on places take the education of the young ones seriously. Explore science, art, history and nature where the emphasis is "please DO touch."
