Bridgeport, Connecticut

Bridgeport is a city that has successfully emerged from the ashes. Once devastated by the loss of its manufacturing base in the early 1990s, the city has strived to rebuild itself and has now become the most populous city in Connecticut with about 140,000 residents. People moving to Bridgeport are drawn by a city that continues to be on the rise and by an atmosphere of optimism that can be felt among its citizens.

Economy:
Bridgeport is known for companies and products such as Singer Manufacturing Co., Remington Arms Co., Underwood Elliot Fisher typewriters, Dictaphone Corp., Bridgeport milling machines, and Crane Valves. Beginning in the late 1900's, de-industrialization took a heavy toll on the city. The 2000's see Bridgeport transitioning into a service economy and providing affordable housing. The renovation of the waterfront and other local developments have made Bridgeport an ideal moving destination for homebuyers wanting to escape the expensive housing market in lower Fairfield County, where median prices are substantially higher than in Bridgeport.

History:
The first recorded settlement in Bridgeport was made in 1659. The city lies where the Pequonnock River empties into Long Island Sound, a part of the Atlantic Ocean. Bridgeport’s location on the deep Black Rock Harbor supported shipbuilding and whaling endeavors in the mid 19th century. The city has had a series of names - Pequonnock, New Fairfield, Stratford, and Fairfield Village. In 1800 it received its present name when a drawbridge was built over the Pequonnock River. It was incorporated as a town in 1821 and as a city in 1836. It grew from a whaling center into an industrial center after the opening of the railroad in 1840.

Tourism:
A visit to Bridgeport is a great chance to enjoy notable harbor sights. Captain's Cove, on the seaside, offers visitors a glance into the city's maritime history through exhibits, harbor cruises, and tours of the floating lighthouse. Captain’s Cove Seaport is the city's main shopping area, with hundreds of small shops dotted along the harbor. The city also has over 30 parks, many of which offer tourists access to baseball fields, tennis courts, picnic areas, and plenty of playgrounds.

The Downtown Cabaret Theater is a great place for those with culture in mind. The Theater has been at its present location since 1975, and offers a taste of local culture and entertainment. The Greater Bridgeport Symphony is another historical stop, with dozens of free live concerts around the city. Bridgeport's most important museum is The Discovery Museum, is popular among children as well as adults.

Colleges/Universities:

Interesting Facts:

  • Known as Park City, Bridgeport contains more than 30 parks.
  • The city was home to the Frisbie Pie Company, and therefore it has been argued that Bridgeport is the birthplace of the Frisbee.
  • The city is also home to the first Subway Restaurant, opened in the North End section of the city in 1965.
