San Jose, California

Success starts here. Moving to San Jose can help open doors to new employment opportunities and living options. Once a quiet, mid-sized city, San Jose has in recent years transformed into a massive metropolis and a phenomenon in U.S. history. Considered the “Capital of Silicon Valley,” San Jose, California is the third largest city in the state and the eleventh largest in the US. Including areas such as Oakland, San Francisco and the East Bay communities, San Jose is a major part of this country's fourth largest metropolis. Adding to the city’s appeal – and Despite its size – San Jose remains one of the country's safest cities, ranking first among major American cities three years in a row.

Economy:
The huge number of high-technology and microprocessor companies around San Jose has led to the area’s nickname: Silicon Valley. The largest city in the valley, San Jose is the self-proclaimed “Capital of Silicon Valley." Local colleges and universities assist in filtering fresh, well-educated talent into the jobbing sector. High economic growth during the technology bubble caused employment, housing prices and traffic congestion to peak in the late 1990s. As the economy slowed in early 2000, employment and traffic congestion also decreased. In 2000, San Jose residents reported having the highest median income of any U.S. city with over 280,000 people. Some major companies headquartered in San Jose include Adobe Systems, IBM, eBay, and Hewlett-Packard.

History:
Named in 1849, San Jose was the original capital of California. In those early years, San Jose promised plenty, however, the people who visited found the city disappointing and the capital building would never be finished. The rainy weather was the final straw, and eventually the unhappy people moved the capital to Monterey. Around the same time, many people began coming to California in search of the state’s precious gold. Although most were unsuccessful in their search, many decided to stay in San Jose to tend to crops. Prunes, apples, apricots, cherries, peaches and pears became the valley's biggest crop, and soon canneries were built to can the fruit and ship it to other states. In 1906, an earthquake hit San Jose hard: business buildings collapsed, homes were damaged and hundreds of people were hurt and killed. Today, the San Jose and the Silicon Valley are known across the country as the hub of the computer and software world.

Tourism:
San Jose offers residence and visitors plenty of actions. Value-packed parks such as Great Adventure, Raging Waters and Gilroy Gardens are located in San Jose. And if that’s not enough, check out the Tech Museum of Innovation, the seriously weird Winchester Mystery House or the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum and Planetarium. Ranked as one of the top three places to grow up in America, San Jose, California is a fierce sports town with plenty of recreational and spectator sports, giving all residence a reason to cheer. Perhaps the city’s most passionate fans are those of the Sharks, who paint themselves teal and blue and take to the HP Pavilion’s “Shark Tank.” In addition, San Jose is made for outdoor action, with its 150 parks and gardens, breezy mountain roads and championship golf courses San Jose has something engaging for anyone interested.

Colleges/Universities:

Interesting Facts:

  • Thirty-five percent of all venture capital funds in the U.S. are invested in San Jose and Silicon Valley companies
  • San Jose averages 300 sunny days per year and an average annual temperature of 70 degrees
