The original residents of the area were American Indians known as Chumash. They settled along the coastline years before the Spanish settlers arrived. When the missionaries started their work, the natives were placed under Spanish rule during the colonization until 1822. For a time the area was a part of Mexico but in 1846, Santa Barbara was taken by the United States.

After the transfer of Santa Barbara to the United States, the lifestyle of the locals didn’t change too much. Ranching and agriculture were still the prominent industries. However after the Civil war, Victorian houses started to be built and the city began to utilize its ideal port location. The local shipping industry started to grow and people from different areas moved to Santa Barbara because of the port.
