History:
Riverside, California was founded by John W. North who also founded Northfield, Minnesota before moving to California from Tennessee. The Naval Orange, originally from Bahia, Brazil became Riverside’s claim to fame. Eliza Tibbets was the first one to plant these trees after receiving three of these trees from a friend called William Saunders who has been a horticulturist from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This was the start of another “gold” rush… this time with the naval industry. By 1882, there were more than half a million citrus trees in California—half still in Riverside. This growth of product brought along with it the development of refrigerated railroad cars, irrigation systems and hotels.
