Irvine, California

Irvine is a planned city of about 210,000 people. It was planned in a combined effort of the University of California and The Irvine Company, and is less than 40 years old. Because of this careful planning, Irvine is a beautiful, prosperous city with very little crime. In 2009, the FBI reported that Irvine had the lowest crime rate of any city over 100,000 people. This, and its high income level, state-of-the-art transportation system and its good schools, makes Irvine a wonderful place to live in. If you are thinking of moving to Irvine, you will find a city that virtually has it all. The summers can be hot, but the winters are mild and rarely does the temperature fall below freezing.

Economy:
Located in Orange County, Irvine has a much higher median income than that of the rest of California. The cost of living is higher than the national average, and the unemployment level is also higher than the national average. The University of California is the largest employer in Irvine, but there is a very diverse base of technology and manufacturing companies there as well. Irvine is also a very popular location for movie filming.

History:
Following the settling of the area by both the Spanish and Mexican governments of most of southern California, land where Irvine stands now was owned by Jose Andres Sepulveda. In 1864, he sold 50,000 acres to three men, one of whom was James Irvine. In 1878, Irvine bought out his partners and ranching began. His son, James Irvine Jr. inherited the ranch and began The Irvine Company and shifted the focus to crops. By 1918, two Marine Corps Facilities had been built on land sold to the government. In 1947, Myford Irvine inherited the area, and he began to open up areas to urban development. In the same year, land was sold for the development of the University of California. The university and planners for the Irvine Comp. began to make plans for a city to surround the university. Several neighborhoods were completed in 1970. The city was planned out to have neighborhoods called villages, and each one had similar style houses, commercial areas, schools, churches and each connected to the University in the shape of a sort of necklace.

Tourism:
In October, Irvine holds its Global Village Festival, with eight stages, hundreds of food and merchant booths, activities for children and cultural exhibits. Open from May until September, the Wild Rivers Water Park features over 40 water rides. The Irvine Museum has art from the impressionist period. There are several beautiful golf courses. There is a twelve acre Arboretum located on the University of California campus. There are many trails around the city for running, biking and hiking. The Verizon Wireless Arena has concerts under the stars all year round. You also have easy access to all the attractions that Orange County has to offer.

Colleges and Universities:

Interesting Facts:

  • Irvine is one of the largest planned communities in the nation.
  • Irvine is called the ‘safest big city in the nation’ due to its very low crime rate.
