Fullerton, California

Fullerton is located in Orange County California, about 22 miles south of Los Angeles. It has a population of about 130,000. Like most cities in southern California, it enjoys a very good climate, with mild summers and winters. Fullerton is known for its racial diversity, and it enjoys a low crime rate. Those moving to Fullerton will enjoy its environmentally friendly lack of urban sprawl, and it is quite easy to bike or even walk to work there. The city is well-laid out and has managed to retain some of its old Spanish charm while becoming an urban college city.

Economy:
Fullerton enjoys a robust economy, even in the troubled state of California. It has a low unemployment rate, and the median salaries are in the top 15 percent of the state. Fullerton has a good mix of employers, including industry, business, government and education. Raython has a site there.

History:
Like the rest of southern California, Fullerton was first visited by Europeans when Spanish explorers came to the area in the 1700s. First settled by a Spanish soldier who began to sell off parcels of land, the area was passed from hand to hand until the railroad came through in 1887. In 1894 Charles Chapman planted orange orchards around the area, beginning an era of agricultural prosperity. In the mid 1900s, things shifted to food processing, and Val Vita Food Products became the largest food processing plant in the country by 1941. Leo Fender developed his Fender guitar in Fullerton in 1949, and it became the premiere guitar in the world in no time. The population boomed after the Second World War when veterans flocked to California. The shift eventually was made from orchards and food to a more diversified mix of business and industry.

Tourism:
Fullerton has many historical buildings that have been renovated. The Fullerton Arboretum is open year round. The Fullerton Museum has many on-going exhibits about the area’s history. The Muckenthaler Cultural Center offers exhibitions and educational opportunities. The Jazz Festival is held through the month of June. Heritage House is one of the oldest surviving homes from the original town. Located very near Fullerton are the La Brea Tar Pits, Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm.

Colleges/Universities:

Interesting Facts:

  • Fullerton was named in honor of George Fullerton, who was instrumental in bringing the railroads to the area.
  • Charles Chapman, who brought orange production to the area, was a descendent of Johnny Appleseed.
  • Fullerton has four sister cities; two in South Korea, one in Japan and one in Mexico
  • Tommy Lasorda, Gwen Sefani and Steven Seagal all grew up in Fullerton.
