Gilbert, Arizona

As seen from the air you would think that Gilbert, Mesa, Tempe, and Chandler in Arizona make up one large seamless city but you would be wrong. They do however all form part of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area which is highly regarded as a safe area in which to live and learn. So if you are thinking of moving to Gilbert, Arizona why not make good use of Relocation.com's expert real estate agents who have good knowledge of the area and will work with you to find your ideal apartment or home.

History:
The name “Gilbert” was conferred on this Arizonan town by William “Bobby” Gilbert who provided land to the Arizona Eastern Railway in 1902 so that a railroad between Phoenix and Florence could be constructed. What started out as a railway siding grew into the town of Gilbert, which focused on farming prime agricultural land in the area. Gilbert began to expand when the construction of the nearby Roosevelt Dam commenced around 1911, but the town maintained its agricultural theme though, even earning the nickname of the “Hay capital of the World”! Gilbert began shaping into its current form as late as the 1970s when the Council came to the realization that in order to survive as a City, it would have to take stock of events in nearby Tempe, Mesa and Chandler too. The alternative was to be absorbed by developments elsewhere, which was unacceptable. So the City Fathers put a long term vision and strategic plan in action, to which the modern City of Gilbert bears witness today.

Economy:
Today, the prime focus of industry in Gilbert is on life science & healthcare, aerospace, aviation & defense, clean and renewable energy, hi-tech research & development, advanced business services, retail, entertainment and tourism. Encouraging entrepreneurship and the development of small businesses, as well as the provision of world-class educational facilities remain priorities as the city of Gilbert plots its way forward in a highly competitive national and international market.

Tourism:
If you enjoy golf then you will be pleased to know that Gilbert’s Trilogy Golf Club has an award-winning course for you to hone your golfing skills on. But, if whacking a ball around is not your scene then you will find plenty of diversity elsewhere in the City. This ranges from the Gilbert Riparian Preserve with over 200 bird species, through an observatory for gazing at stars, to major-league baseball stadiums, and two ice rinks, one for hockey and the other for recreation too. Then, Gilbert’s Downtown Heritage District has theaters, boutique shops, a museum and loads of eateries offering everything from simple food to exquisite fine-dining.

Colleges/Universities:

Interesting Facts:

  • The most abundant mineral found in Arizona is copper.
  • At a very lofty height of 12,643 feet, Mount Humphreys near Flagstaff is Arizona’s highest peak.
