Living costs, property taxes drive moving trends

January 11, 2010 - Homeowners and renters who are considering a move may want to explore the weather conditions and potential living costs of their desired area, as these factors may have a greater impact than some residents expect.

ABF U-Pack, a national moving company, told the Beaumont Enterprise that Beaumont, Texas and Honolulu, Hawaii are the top two destinations of its clients.

Theresa Rocknic, a native of Fort Worth, told the media outlet that she and her husband recently returned to Beaumont after living in New Jersey for seven years because their "property taxes were $1,000 a month" on the East Coast.

Citytowninfo.com gave Beaumont an eight out of 10 ranking on the affordability of its property taxes as compared to its peer cities across the country, which may offer one reason why many individuals choose to relocate there.

Some states, such as Indiana, have proposed legislation to put a cap on property taxes in order to make their regions more desirable to prospective residents.

The state's lawmakers will vote on a bill that would cap property taxes at 1 percent of a home's value for homeowners, Fox 59 Indianapolis reports.

Individuals who wish to reduce their living costs may consider relocating to areas that are working to decrease property taxes.
