Massachusetts tops national education competition

August 27, 2010 - Many parents choose to relocate to areas of the country with stronger school systems.

Considering a new report, it could be that Massachusetts' already strong reputation as a hub for education could grow even more. This week, the Obama administration announced the winners of the second round of its "Race to the Top" competition, which judged the states with the best education systems. Scoring 471 points out 500, Massachusetts ranked as the state with the country's top school system.

Nine states in all, plus the District of Columbia, ranked in the top ten and would receive a portion of $4.35 billion in education funding. The Bay State's top scored netted it $250 million in federal grants, although it was not the state to receive the biggest award. New York, which ranked second, received $700 million in funding.

"Every state that applied showed a tremendous amount of leadership and a bold commitment to education reform," said Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. "We set a high bar and these states met the challenge."

Massachusetts' top score could catch the attention of families who are moving with children. According to the Boston Globe, Governor Deval Patrick said that the state's innovative reform techniques and efforts to bridge the education gap between students of all racial and income statuses set it apart as a leader in education.
