Moving to a new home with a puppy

February 3, 2010 - With the holiday season coming to an end on Valentine's Day, some prospective homebuyers may have gotten a new puppy as a gift from a loved one.

However, those who do have a new addition should keep certain things in mind if they happen to be close to relocating to a new home or apartment.

Pets, especially puppies, may get confused or even scared in new environments, and it's important to make them feel at ease.

Before moving day, and assuming you have access to the new home, consider bringing the puppy to the new place early so they get a chance to become familiar with the new surroundings. Also plan on bringing a familiar toy or treat with you on the first couple of visits, just so the puppy has something familiar in the strange new place.

On the actual day of the move, section off a portion of the new home and leave the puppy in there during the move. It's important to keep them quarantined in a sense so that everything can be brought in safely. It also cuts down on the potential of the dog running away, since the front door will most likely be left open.
