Downsizing a tough aspect of relocation

August 20, 2010 - Seniors can have a tough time moving out of their homes because it downsizing often means shedding many of their possessions and downsizing.

Some look at it like they're losing something in the exchange, but the right attitude can make downsizing a freeing experience, wrote Bridget Donnelly for Pennsylvania's Centre Daily Times. Moving out of one's home and into a smaller one can give people the opportunity to de-clutter their lives, taking things that they may not need anymore and giving them to family or selling them.

Relocating seniors should consider downsizing a process, rather than a one-time event, advised Donnelly. Starting well before moving day can give a person the required time to make important decisions on what can be moved to the next home. Seniors should also be sure to get help if necessary, since downsizing can be a physically and emotionally draining task, Donnelly cautioned.

The column pointed out that planning ahead is an important step to moving. A person should know what kind of storage space will be available in their new home, that way they don't take more items than they need or leave important possessions behind.

In addition to friends and family, moving companies can also offer advice on what items to bring along when a senior downsizes to a new home.
