States offer incentives to encourage business relocation
August 11, 2010 - Every state offers different incentives to entice businesses into relocation, but metropolitan areas on the border between two states face unique circumstances.
The Kansas City metropolitan area, home to about 2 million people, is divided between the states of Kansas and Missouri, creating some awkward situations when battling for business relocation, reported the Kansas City Star.
The paper notes that losing a business to a state across the country is one thing; losing business to your neighbor is another.
But some development agencies in Kansas City simply won't actively lure businesses from across state lines.
"Regardless of which side of the state line you are, employees aren't going to move," David Kerr, director of the Missouri Department of Economic Development, told the newspaper. "We still reap the benefit of those employees and their spending."
Both Kansas and Missouri were recently ranked among the top 10 states to offer incentives for attracting business, according to a study by the consulting firm Pollina Corporate Real Estate.
Tracking 31 factors, such as energy costs, taxes, infrastructure, and education, Pollina found that Virginia was the best state for business in 2010. California, for the seventh consecutive year, came in last.
